We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcelo Maccagnan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcelo, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Brazil. I grew up there and moved to the US when I was 20 years old for college. I think as a musician, growing up in Brazil I was able to experience a very big amount of musical genres. I grew up listening to American/British classics like Carpenters, Tears for Fears, Queen, ABBA because of my mom, but at the same time, I was constantly exposed to Brazilian music and was also able to absorb a lot of that language. I think that mixture of genres is what makes me the musician I am today. I love fusion and experimentation and I believe it’s mostly because I always understood that music can be good in many different levels and genres.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After graduating college, I moved to NYC and since then, it has been an amazing journey. I was able to release 3 albums as a band leader on the last 6 years which I am very proud of. I was also able to perform with some amazing musicians and play in unique festivals and cities around the country. One of the most important things I learn with time, is that we should never stop learning and practicing. As a bassist, I constantly work on my sound and chops to make sure I can keep up with the music I want to play and compose. One of the biggest pleasures of being a musician is the endless exploration of the art and the never-ending grind. In many times, it can be quite challenging, but overall, it does bring meaning and purpose to my life. I deeply enjoy being able to work with music and to meet and play with new artists constantly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In NYC, i think a must do is to check some of the classic old jazz venues like Village Vanguard and Smalls. So I would definitely start with one of those. After that, I would say check some of the museums like the Met, or Natural History Museum. Next would be to get some great food. I live in Brooklyn, so we would have to go get some amazing Brooklyn Bagels when we have a chance. Bagel Pub is my choice, but many others just as good. I think after doing all those things, exploring some more music and live events would be choice. Probably somewhere in Brooklyn like Bar Lunatico and if I can do some self-promoting…bring them to a weekly Jam Session me and my friend host every sunday at pinkFROG cafe in Williamsburg called “The Spontaneous Jam Session”.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be here without my parents. They are the only reason I can stand where I am at today, so shoutout to them. And of course, my wife, she is the most supportive person I could have asked for.
