We had the good fortune of connecting with Marci Christie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marci, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance for me has drastically changed, especially in the last 2 years or so. With the birth of my children and the sudden passing of a family friend, it changed my perspective on what is important and it as it turns out, it’s always spending time with your loved ones. I had been working ever since I was 16 and never stopped. It gave me fulfillment to move up in the leadership ladders to prove to myself that my hard work does have a reward, but when I would get home, I would be so tired or so stressed that it hindered my time with my loved ones and my personal creativity. Or, I’d decide not to take a vacation day and miss important events that I realize now, I can never get back. What if I just took the day off and attended that birthday party? I was too obsessed about my work reputation that I would put special moments like that aside, but I learned those jobs will always be there and you can be replaced so quickly..the moments with your family and children and friends..never can be replaced. So, I’ve made my priorities now to be more present and place my energy towards what I love to do instead!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created 13Mementos as a way to grieve, originally. I had a cat named Twiggy who after accidentally eating a wilted lily, she passed away at only 4 years old. It was devastating. Twiggy helped me through a hard breakup, she was just my everything when I felt alone and slept on my chest every night and was so in tune with my emotions. So, when I would discuss this grief with people at work, I was met with people who frankly, didn’t care. They didn’t understand and would tell me “it’s just a cat, get over it.” This led to my moment of inspiration. I designed a heart lapel pin to wear in remembrance of Twiggy and I wore it every day as a reminder that she was with me in my heart. It helped me process it and opened a new world of creative ideas. I started to sell the heart pins as mementos to remind you of a person, place or thing. It was extra special to see someone else wear the heart pin that looked the same as mine, but we each had our own memory that we were wearing it for. Now I have created postcards and stickers as mementos as well to spread the memories!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! I wish everyone could visit Lake Tahoe! Admittedly, we moved to Tahoe from Las Vegas only a few months pre-pandemic, so I have a few favorites but really, the main event is the lake and all of the nature that surrounds us. As far as where to go shop, first place is Botanical Arts Company. It’s a woman owned plant and art supply shop and was the first place I felt right at home! Plants and art? Yes please! My second place would be Cuppa Tahoe..it’s a book store and coffee shop all in one! Another perfect combination. I would then take you straight to the lake. There are so many beaches to see and explore, but every point of view is beautiful. I also have to do a small shoutout to my Vegas favorites! Bleu Moon Bakery is one my best friends and she creates the most delicious plant based baked goods! Fergusons Downtown is the home of so many amazing locally small shops including Myron Hensel Photography, Mothership Coffee Roasters and The Market Shop where you can find my mementos!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to Shoutout to my husband, Nicholas, and my best friends, Rachael and Matt! Without their support and encouragement, I would have quit a thousand times, but it always feels so special that at least the people in my corner love what I do, so I continue to do it for them and they give me so much inspiration creatively.
