We had the good fortune of connecting with Marci Javril and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marci, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Consistent Adaptability! I have shifted my career several times over the years, each time because I saw opportunity in a new related direction.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a lifelong explorer of movement, and it all began with ballet, tap, jazz and Musicals. I started college, but wanting to dance professionally, dropped out and was lucky enough to join African-American choreographers in their companies (Rael Lamb, Dance for the New World: Horton-based and Consuelo Atlas of Impulse Dance: Ailey-based).

I trained incessantly in my twenties, joined Nana Shineflug’s Dance Co: Graham-based at Columbia College, and received my BA in Dance Therapy there.  I joined the Contact Improvisation collective performance group in San Francisco, and explored collaborations with theatre and drama. As I discovered how magic massage and bodywork was for dancers, I went on to train with an orthopedic physical therapist who gave me wonderful skills to keep my body aligned and healthy.

These were foundational skills that led me to develop an alternative PE program for teens I called STEP BEYOND: using the Step Platform (they donated 20 units to my after school programs), improvising and combining patterns from gymnastics, dance, hiphop, and obstacle courses.

I also developed my own style of therapeutic lymph massage Melting Touch Method©, combining fascia and internal organ release, breath, and rhythm. This I taught for many years in the massage school system, weaving my Dance career around the hours I spent in the classroom.

While teaching jazz and aerobics and studying karate in Japan, I chanced upon a Computer Arts Installation, became intrigued, and pursued the inventors of this new CGI technology in earnest. I connected and collaborated with them at Arts & Science conferences, combining my dance skills with my science knowledge, and was invited all over the world.

In my 40’s, I took advanced training in Clairvoyance and Spiritual Sensitivity, and Kriya Tantra Yoga. Here I learned how to see auras, read energy, and put more excitement into other people’s lives. I taught Intimate Touch for Intimate Partners for many years, including at Burningman Festivals, and led students into a sensual dance of communication.

In my 60’s I started learning FlowArts and firespinning skills (juggle, hula hoop, contact staff, fire fans) and then added AcroYoga when I turned 70. During all my life, I am also dancing West African, Salsa, Samba, HipHop, Ecstatic Dance, 5 Rhythms, and West Coast Swing!

My Brand? consistently adaptable, stay curious, seek adventure, try something new, feel better faster, stay stronger longer =The Art & Science of Rejuvenation

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live near Marina del rey Boat Harbor, that would be one of the first places we could go. I would LOVE to take them on a BIKE tour of my area, go north all the way past Santa Monica Pier, to Pacific Palisades, and another time, go south along Ballona Creek past Manhattan Beach all the way to Torrance. I love HIKING, perhaps Baldwin HIlls, Descanso Gardens, Huntington Gardens, Griffith Park, The Getty Museum, and I recently went to the Arboretum, very wonderful I love ART Museums – LACMA, MOMA, The Hammer, The Broad, and all the Art galleries & Shops along Washington, Melrose, Main St, Abott Kinney, and Montana. I Love DANCING, so I would take them to RocknRetro at The Warehouse, R&Blues outdoors at Fisherman’s Village, West Coast Swing at SoHo, Bachata at By Your Side, and outdoor Salsa on the 3rd St Promenade. I love to eat at PERRY’s on the beach, Thai food, Burgers, and various Delis around Venice. I’m not much of a downtown or shows person these days, but when visitors are in town, I like to find something at The Greek, or Dorothy Chandler, or Hollywood Bowl.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My college (Columbia College, Chicago, IL 1978) undergraduate Mentor Jane Ganet Siegel was an original Chapter Member of the American Dance Therapy Association. She coached me through getting sober, learning more about my inner psyche, discovering how to help and support others, and how to implement these insights for a better life. She passed away in 2014.
