Meet Marguerite Truckey | Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marguerite Truckey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marguerite, how do you think about risk?
I believe that without risk comes no reward — taking risks in my personal and professional life has been daunting but in many cases, has turned out to be the next step in success, as I walk down my path in life and film. Moving across the country, falling in love, jumping into a new workplace — these are all moves that took courage. The biggest since moving out to California has been the transition from director to producer, one that has really transformed my relationship with the industry, but has also made me a stronger creative and efficient director (when I switch back for a project or two). That goes to say, some risks haven’t paid off, and therefore didn’t feel rewarding nor electric. But those risks didn’t pay off, those little “failures” i’ve experienced…ultimately, they led me to the place I am now, so in their own ways, they were stairs to my steps of success. And I need the stairs!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Film is a love affair for me that started when I was a young girl, but never fully manifested into a career option until I was put in a “Video” class my junior year of high school. I grew up on stage in theater productions and had never considered the switch behind the camera, but once I did, it clicked. I slowly stepped away from acting and began to embrace my other artistic potentials, through my writing and photography. That led me to Colorado Film School in Aurora, CO, where I became a director and immersed myself in that process. Five years after Colorado Film School, I moved to LA to attend ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, where I graduated last April.
I took major breaks in schooling, between high school and community college, and again between community college and private school. Those weren’t the easiest to process mentally or deal with professionally. But in that time, I learned immensely. I worked full-time and paid my own rent, I traveled, I lived all over the United States, I met people from all over, I had bad days, I had good days….I was able to really experience life in my twenties the way I wanted to. And though I wasn’t 21 when I graduated college, as an artist and creative, I was able to elevate my work through my lived experiences, which not only enriched my work with unique perspective, but strengthened my individuality as an artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A beach day is pretty obvious, no matter what the weather. Worst case scenario, drinks overlooking the water! I had an idyllic day recently with family, and I’d probably do the same thing — start at the Reel Inn in Malibu for some fresh seafood, then head to Paradise Cove to hike and relax, then stop at Tarantula Hill Brewing in Thousand Oaks after for beer and pizza.
If you’re a nature fan like me, I recommend Huntington Gardens to everyone, or Descanso Gardens in Montrose.
The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena has some incredible art, including my favorite sculptor, Auguste Rodin, if you’re looking for somewhere quality, like the Getty but more low-key.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I was in college, I was student ambassador of the Green Film School Alliance, who is partnered with the EMA (Environmental Media Association) to promote sustainability efforts on sets, starting at the student level. Being from the mountains of Colorado, I am very passionate about our environment and our individual roles in its health, while preventing further added waste into the system. Film sets can be very wasteful, but it’s actually very simple to make effective changes. Many crew members have had interest in EWA’s green seals for their own films and programs, so it’s a field I’m happy to be a part of and hope will continue to grow!
More than anyone, personally and professionally, my parents have been the support that I can credit any of my success to. To my mom, the first person I saw direct, and to my dad, the person who took me to see Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings. The gates opened that day and thank you for never wanting them closed.
