We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is necessary to accomplish anything. Risk should be mitigated when possible but its definitely something everyone should incorporate into their lives or career. I wouldn’t be on stage telling jokes making people laugh and feeling the high that comes from that if I risk getting on stage the first time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a comedian from South Central Los Angeles. Being form South Central already sets me apart in my field of comedy and entertainment because we have this belief in us that says if we made it this far and survived this long in the gang capital of the world, entertainment, or college or what ever it is we do is easy. So far in comedy I’m most proud of starting because that’s a challenge in itself, getting up there and trying to make strangers see your point of view. Second thing I’m most proud of is making it on Revolt Tv and their first season of “Funny AF”. That right there is a piece of my personal history that will never be erased. That can never be taken from me and I did it with faith and hard work. Accomplishing the few things that I have in such a short amount of time felt easy. The hard part for me was starting. Starting took me years to do but once I started it felt like all things were working in my favor. I still have a ways to go but I know with the right faith and hard work nothing can stop me. During this journey, what I learned thus far is you have to bet on yourself. If its placed on your heart do it! The second thing I learned is, its’ nothing like having genuine people around you. Everyone is not your friend or rooting for you but those people that are you need to cherish them. Honor your world and honor your true friends because it’s not many in the world of entertainment. Shout out Aaron Colbert, Whisper Washington and Eric Mack! I want people reading this to know I’m authentic. My brand is what you see. My brand is me being my authentic self and representing my city! I want to make it far as possible in this game so I can reach back and help the next man or woman do the same. I want to be able to inspire and encourage others from my city and cities like mines. Any and everything is possible and we knew that as kids, we just have to hold on to that wonder and curiosity!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of the best places in the city that I can think of would definitely be Roscoes for chicken and waffles. I feel like people coming from out of town have to go there just to say they went there. Sweet Chix hit too, shout out to Nas. At some point during the trip we’d have to hit a day party. Brunch 2 Bomb or a TG3 event usually cracks. It’s nothing like dope music and day drinking! A comedy club of course! We’d have to hit a few comedy spots because that’s my arena and you have to love hanging out and shooting the shit with other comics. Venice beach is dope, main street in Santa Monica to bar hop. The GS lounge as well. Rodeo Dr. is another spot to visit. I’ve had family from out of town and they usually want to see Rodeo and Hollywood. Lastly I would have to take them to a “Sunday Fun Day”. I use to own a Camaro so I’m into the donut scene but I’ve also loved Lowriders as a kid and still do. That’s a part of me I don’t think many people know. I love the cruise scene so we’d definitely have to end the trip with that.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out several people. All these people played a significant role in my life and helped formed who I am on stage. Shout out to my mother Michelle for her love and raising and molding me into the man I am today. My grandmother Daisey for assisting in raising and helping shape my faith. My little sister Chey for being a young energetic force in my life keeping me on my toes. My lady Tiera for backing and supporting my goals and dreams regarding comedy or anything my heart desires. My uncles Wayne and Norman for pushing knowledge. Aunt Tammy for the love and encouragement she’s always given me. My bro Ervin EP Pope for showing me that entrepreneurship and dreams are actually possible and my boy Emac and Brandon Lawrence for pushing me towards comedy! I want all of these people to know I would have never made it to RevoltTv and onto these other stages without y’all!
