We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Nyren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I love being a part of the creative branding world! It makes me so happy knowing that through my designs I get to help people and companies become their best and grow. I think that is one of the most important factors behind my success. That I see my job as I get to help others and that together we will reach their goals. The strongest motto within my work is “Together we will create your dream brand”. I believe that working “with” the client is very important instead of just working “for” the client. Making them feel heard and a part of the process. That their voice matters and that together we will be able to create their dream brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What set me apart as a designer in the creative LA world are two things. First, my background, I am Swedish, born and raised in beautiful Stockholm. You can see my Scandinavian background in my designs. I have a clean, minimalist yet modern style. Making brands look strong, trendy, elegant, and professional. I truly believe in less is more. I love simplicity, which is a strong component in Scandinavian design. Secondly, I do not only design anything within the branding world (logos, prints, web, and much more), I also build websites. This helps me stand out a lot because that means people can come to me and get both a complete branding design package but also the website built out. Instead of having to go to one designer and then go to a developer to build out the web design. I am the whole package! This has helped me grow as a business and getting new clients. I am very lucky to say that most of my clients are through recommendations for old projects/current clients. Not only do they love my work, but people love that they can come to one person and get it all done.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a girl who grew up in Stockholm, Sweden with very different weather I believe the best part about LA is the weather and beach. There is something so relaxing, yet motivating and recharging to be on the beach. The warm sunshine, the soft sand, and the blue ocean! A day at the beach is great for anything! If I am stressed, then nothing helps better than the view and sound of the ocean. If I need motivation, then laying on the beach and having nothing but my thoughts is a great way to get fresh ideas. And lastly, just a happy place to hang out and enjoy your friends! That said, when friends visit, we would spend a lot of time on the beach, but do trips out of it. One day we would go to the lively Venice Beach, another day we would relax on Santa Monica beach, and then, of course, some days on the surf beaches in malibu. Things are a bit different today because of Covid, but LA has some of the best restaurants that I always take my friends to. A few of my favorites places for breakfast/brunch are Bardonna, Gjusta, Great white, Butchers Daughter. My top healthy lunch places are Flower child, True food, Kreation, and Cafe Gratitude. And lastly, for dinners, I love Gjusta, Gjelina, Elephante, American Beauty, Pasjoli, Tasting kitchen. LA’s list of great restaurants is never-ending! But what better way to enjoy LA than with a tasty brunch, then a sunny beach day, and lastly, end it with some great food and wine at some of the cities best restaurants?
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today, having my own design company, ongoing projects, and happy clients without my family and boyfriend. It might sound cheesy or obvious, but to me, the people around me support means everything. Around four years ago, when I realized that what I truly wanted to do was to work for myself, I did not have the confidence. My dream was to have my own company, choose who to work with and what projects to be a part of. At that time, I had never worked for myself, so I was nervous and quite honestly not sure if I had what it takes to be able to do it. But my family and boyfriend made sure to give me the confidence I needed to not only quit a job for the first time but also to start my own company. If they did not make me feel as confident and strong four years ago, I would probably still be working for someone else and not having my dream job.
