We had the good fortune of connecting with María Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi María, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balance, that desired state of equilibrium, so hard to achieve and easy to lose once it’s achieved. For me balance is always the goal, when I reach it I feel the opening and I am able to create space for new things to flow in.

But it is the most ephemeral state, once I reach it and new things flow in, I lose it, and here we go again.

I don’t think I am alone in this balance hustle.

Being a business owner, a creative thinker and doer has been hard to find balance and keep, but my most helpful tools have been watching what I eat, swimming, stretching everyday, many reminders to drink water, daily meditation, a big dose of being present and giving and receiving love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a textile artist and designer, I have started my own design studio in 2016, since then it has been an evolution, my art and my project taking form slowly, getting closer to where I want it to be. Was not easy, but is happy. Which makes it all so worth it.
My studio – Maria Romero Studio is focused in creating functional textiles for the home, and textile art pieces for any space, custom made, I do consultancy also from design to product development ( my books are now open ). And also run a clothing brand, called Tintorería Closet, a permanent collection made of natural fibers and colored with natural pigments.
With both projects I look to change the way people perceive textiles, their materiality and the importance of quality. Something I feel in America is not as valued, but it is, people just haven’t stop to process it yet.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you come to NY, I will take you to have lunch to Altro Paradiso, we will share the cacio e pepe. We will walk everywhere, definitely will cross a bridge walking, is then when you walk away from manhattan or to it that you see it and realize what a beauty she is.

I live in Brooklyn and I love it, so to finish the day we will be there, dinner at Agi’s Counter and drinks at Night moves – to finish the night – Caribbean Social Club. Where we can play Domino and play music for hours surrounded by the best people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Always my friends and my family. My greatest mentors and companions.

In my business practice I am faced with so many challenges all the time, and sometimes it gets really scary, and hopeless, but then I look around and I see the community around me and my project. And I realize that all I have to do is keep showing up with the same love, because they are always there, ready to support me, to give advice, to just listen or to help in so many different forms.

Is to them that I owe so much of my success. My project and them are the loves of my life.
