We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariah Street and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t fully realize this until later on in life, but I am extremely creative and innovative. So I’ve always been the type of the person to either do something different than everyone was doing, improve something that already exists to make it better, or identify a gap/lack in something (a strategy, industry, relationship, whatever) and find a way fill it. When I was thinking about starting my own law firm, I saw that there weren’t many firms whose mission was to primarily serve the black community in estate and legacy planning. Funny enough, I identified a long time ago that there was in a need in the community for culturally relate-able education and services surrounding legacy planning (due to systemic racism and the after-effects). I saw the need because I experienced it first-hand when my own mother passed away suddenly at the young age of 46 without a plan in place. After doing some research, I soon realized that this is the norm for the black community, regardless of status, wealth, education, age, etc., and wanted to do something about it. Then – Legacy Street Law was born! I wanted to make a great impact, on my own terms.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is a NC-based legacy planning law firm. For legacy-minded CEOs, business owners, and their families, we are the leading law firm that provides comprehensive generational wealth and legacy planning. We combine customized planning strategies, culturally relevant education, and the legacy goals and values of our clients to make the ultimate plan that actually works and impacts generations to come. And we are particularly focused on serving the black community in this area. (We serve anyone, but this is our focus).

I am most proud of the fact that I feel as though I am making a real difference in my community. The amount of relief and sense of personal fulfillment that clients have after doing their legacy planning is priceless! They feel as though they are being a leader in and good steward over their family and businesses, and changing their family tree at the same time. And that was my original intent with starting my firm!

I started my firm with absolutely no prior business knowledge and honestly, I almost let imposter syndrome get the best of me. I saw everyone else who was light-years ahead of me and was overwhelmed and thought “umm, can I really do this?” But I am very thankful to have had the right people in my circle, including friends, family, mentors, coaches, and a therapist (because I firmly believe we have to be on a healing journey as a business owner or your personal wounds will pour over into your business in a negative way).

As a brand along with my own personal story, I want people to know and understand the power of intentionality in your decisions. It not only affects you, but also the people around you. And you get to choose whether that impact is a negative or positive one. Similarly, never stop growing and learning to become the best version of you that you can be!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Downtown Raleigh for sure – so many good restaurants, rooftop bars/lounges, and also museums! For restaurants, I particularly like Bida Manda (a Raleigh favorite), Gravy, and Cafe Luna. Little City Brewing is a nice as well for a fun vibe and drinks. And then CAM Raleigh for a little art museum fun!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to all of my amazing mentors and coaches who have helped me truly see and believe my value and up-leveled my faith as I navigated and transitioned into business ownership!
