We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Lavallee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, what’s your definition for success?
It took a long time to realize that creativity is where my soul is at peace. I delight in the details, where ordinary objects do become extraordinary … depending on the point of view. Painting, fabricating and creating is where I’m at my best. Success is that moment when a piece is about to be finished and it fills me with joy every time I look at it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Painting in acrylic is a favored medium, but it’s just the beginning! I use stamps, coins, pushpins, gold foils, scrabble letter and epoxy resin. All these material are used in the fabrication of birds, and mixed media pieces that are unconventional. My work is defined by unusual material, presented in layer upon layers to achieve the final effect.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I would take a walk along the back bay in Newport Beach, where the birds are busy living their lives and the scent of wild rosemary just makes me happy. The next day, I would go to Crystal cove state park to walk along the shore. King terns, sandpipers, and seagulls will great us with their raucous sounds. Will delight in spying a sea otter floating in shallow waters. Last, I would go to the Pelican Hill grill, to enjoy a mesmerizing sunset among the tree groves, and toast the end of a successful day. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I met this terrific group of artist friends, we encourage and support each other though our trial and tribulations. We are an informal group of 5 lady artist, and we call ourselves ”The Art Club”. We share information, criticized each other’s work and we enjoy some serious “Aha” moments together. Overtime we created a circle of trust, a safe place to exchange ideas and brainstorm together. Another source of joy for me.
