We had the good fortune of connecting with Marina Selverian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marina, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am lucky to have truly lived the American Dream. I came to the United States from a small, but mighty country called Armenia, over 30 years ago. Armenia, at the time, was still under the control of the Soviet Union, and my upbringing was very much influenced by that. Having grown up in a communist country as a little girl I never thought I would be able to build and run my own business. The environment I grew up in limited those dreams, but when I came to America I discovered I had freedom. Freedom to work where I wanted, freedom to be a successful female businessowner. This freedom I was given motivated me to take risks and try different things from working in a chewing gum factory to running a luncheonette, and to finally going to beauty school and discovering my true passion: working with people and making them look and feel good about themselves. After over 20 years in the beauty industry, I opened my first spa in Philadelphia after my daughter was born. I built Polished Spa into a successful and thriving full-service spa, winning many awards throughout the years. Yet… life tends to throw you curveballs and after 14 amazing years of having my spa, I decided to move closer to my daughter in California so I sold my business. However, my persevering spirit did not let me give up on my passion, and I opened a small studio in Tustin, CA. I am grateful that my experiences in life have taught me to appreciate the freedom and opportunities this country has provided me and it continues to motivate me to be the best I can be while helping others be the best that they can be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The driving factor behind my studio is as a personal and private sanctuary for anyone that wants a quick get away from the world and an hour or so to themselves to relax, vent, share, or chill while they receive their nail services. That is what my clients say they love most about their experience and what is most fulfilling for me. My studio is a safe space for all my clients. This has allowed me to not only build lasting professional relationships with my clients, but also lifelong friendships. Above all, that is what I am most proud of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
