We had the good fortune of connecting with Marina Yermakova Timm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe that the most important factor in achieving long-lasting success as an artist is continuous striving to produce better work, guided by authenticity and perseverance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist, you want to be authentic in your expression and skillful in your medium. Both take time and different kind of effort but it’s always worth it even if it’s rarely easy. My work could be described as geometric abstraction or, suprematism. I use paper and adhesive to create my pieces, which are mostly works on paper but sometimes are mounted on a wooden panel. My style developed naturally over the years and I finally feel like I have acquired enough skills to express what I feel and execute it well. I always welcome feedback from artists and curators whom I respect, I believe it’s important for artistic growth. My biggest obstacles are self-doubt and harsh self-criticism.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh wow, I love this question! Mostly, because I really wish I could host an out-of-town friend right now. Luckily, my friends like going to art galleries because there would be a lot of that with food and drinks afterwards. One of my favorite places to spend a day is LA’s Arts District downtown. Other than that, getting lost at The Getty Center for a few hours, bar hopping in Venice Beach, visiting Central Library in DTLA or The Skirball Center on Sepulveda Blvd., dancing at The Line Hotel in KTown.. No shortage of fun things to do in this city. During the pandemic I was able to keep seeing art exhibitions at local galleries by appointment.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly, I consider myself very fortunate in this life because of my friends and family who have provided a strong foundation for me to work and grow on. Secondly, I’m grateful for my fellow artists who guide and support me, as we navigate our creative careers.
