We had the good fortune of connecting with Mario Miguelito and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mario, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Void Asylumº is defined as: the space where light enters and becomes the creation of its own imagination. This definition takes direct influence from the universal phenomenon of the a prism. Think of a white light entering into a triangular space and breaking up into different frequencies, then leaving the triangular space on the other side, many different colors with each color being that same white light but in a different, transformed frequency. This is Void Asylumº and our clients are the light.
I wanted my clothing brand to be a call to freedom for those ready to let go of their societal tether and fall into themselves in order to truly get to know who they are individually, void of judgment or outside influence. Void Asylumº openly accepts and cultivates the menagerie, offering them a safe (asylum) space (void) for them to comfortably learn to acknowledge and appreciate their individuality through their style of dress.
One of the main goals of Void Asylumº is to address hyper-masculinity within our culture by exploring male representation through world culture of the past and present. We tackle this misconception by highlighting things that are foolishly deemed “feminine” or “gay” today that our uncles, dads, grandpas & celebrities have worn in decades past or by highlighting other cultures around the world that have their pinnacle of masculinity represented in ways that some ignorantly deem as emasculating.
Void Asylumº challenges societal norms by exploring the spectrum of life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m booked & busy. Currently I am working with SoHarlem Inc, an incubator program in Harlem that highlights and supports local designers of color. Gucci awarded SoHarlem a grant under their Changemaker program to support a singular designer and I am, at present, the Gucci Changemaker Apprentice. Also I am apart of the Columbia Business School partnership with the Harlem Local Vendor Program, working to assist Void Asylum° in scaling our business across various platforms including: in store retail, e-commerce and local pop-up events. Lastly, private design clients are a big bulk of my time and as a result of my most recent Hollywood venture, I am currently working on a clothing collaboration with Void Asylum° and the infamous OnlyFans- my biggest client to date.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Variety is the spice of life so when my friends come to town I like to explore with them. For food I would definitely take them to La Parilla in the Bronx for Dominican delights, Thai Son in Chinatown for a Vietnamese/Thai/Chinese fusion experience or, for a quick slice, down to Greenwich Village to Joe’s Pizza. For those who love to shop we can hit up Harlem’s 125th St, Soho or 34th st to get the latest fashions! Everyone is so inquisitive about Central Park so I always love taking people to the more unexplored portions of the park so we can get lost and forget that we are in the city and then from there take them on an artistic journey into the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I think part of the beauty of NYC is the architecture so my favorite tourist thing to do is to take the double decker bus and take in the sites and history of our beautiful city that you don’t get from riding the subway. Exploring outside of Manhattan is also a must for me so I definitely would plan a day to hit up the New York Botanical Gardens and City Island in the Bronx or a fun day at Coney Island or Riis Beach in Brooklyn.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people to shout out in my story but today I’m going to shout out the OnlyFans Creative Fund Fashion Edition Competition. Yes, THEE infamous OnlyFans decided to rebrand themselves and highlight creators around the country. This past April I was selected amongst thousands of creatives to fly out to LA and compete against other designers in a fashion reality tv competition. I did not know what to expect from this but I did my best and thankfully I was crowned one of the 3 winners of the series. Obviously the prize money was a huge blessing but what I got out of this experience was so much more than just money. Being around other designers and creating genuine connections amongst my peers was something I had not experienced before. Even though we were competitors on set, off camera we were creating bonds of encouragement that I’d been longing to experience for years. I was just thankful to be in the room with these people that I can now call friends & family. Another big support system for me was the OnlyFans production team. I’ve never done tv before so I could only guess what type of energy the staff would be giving us and I couldn’t have been more wrong. Coming to set everyday and working with the various camera crew, hair & makeup team, production staff etc. was such a huge confidence boost for me. They not only made filming such a pleasure but they affirmed my talent and more importantly my inner beauty which is something I have been working on diligently. For them to recognize the light inside of me and offer their support, even after filming wrapped, was and is mind blowing. Again, more friends & family that I have been asking the Universe for, for a while now. Last but not least, being one of the winners, I have been connected directly with the legendary designer, Rebecca Minkoff. She is now my mentor and has so kindly sat with me and offered her advice on what I can do to take Void Asylumº to the next level, in ways I would have never thought and I am just so overwhelmed with gratitude. To top it all off, this experience was chronicled on film for anyone to watch for free and is currently out right now on https://of.tv/video/
I am blessed and beyond.
