We had the good fortune of connecting with Mario Solorzano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mario, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I credit Boredom for this one. Before the pandemic, my biggest hobby for over a decade was going out for Latin partner dancing, specifically bachata, during my free time. However, with everything temporarily shut down, boredom struck, and I found myself at home. It was then that my sister suggested buying a simple painting kit and trying to paint our dog. Surprisingly, I not only enjoyed the process but also discovered that I had a talent for it. As a result, I began painting all the dogs of friends and family for fun, and it gradually evolved into something much bigger.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I paint what I love or find beautiful, and my subjects have evolved over time. I initially started with portraits but have since ventured into a diverse range of subjects. From nude portraits and pop art to family portraits and various objects, my artwork covers a wide spectrum. I love experimenting with special paints, creating UV reactive art, glow-in-the-dark paintings, temperature-sensitive art, hidden image art, and mix media pieces with objects attached to the canvas.

My art varies from humorous pieces to darker and more edgy works that may not be suitable for a family setting. Due to this wide range, it can be a bit challenging to find events that perfectly align with my style, but I remain true to myself and seek out audiences who can connect with and appreciate my art regardless.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve grown to really love my current home city, Pomona CA. It’s been my introduction to the art scene and you can find my art pieces in numerous businesses and locations within the city. I actually participate in their monthly art walks and work actively with some of Pomona’s best galleries! If you ever wanna see what art Pomona has to offer visit us on the 2nd Saturday of the month. I’ll always have my newest and best art in display at “artist in the alley” curated by Nate McMullen

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank my sister Crystal. Not only did she suggest getting the art supplies I’m trying it when I first started but she’s been there throughout My entire art career. She’s always suggesting events, improvements on my paintings, which frames don’t go, and she’s even collaborated with me on some of my favorite art pieces. She does art herself on Instagram under the name@crystals.curiositiess
