We had the good fortune of connecting with marisabel bazan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi marisabel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a career in art because it is truly something that makes me feel alive and brings joy to my life. It gives me the opportunity to connect with people in another language by evoking emotions and awakening their senses. I love that in my career as an artist I really get to play. When you “play”, this intuitive wisdom and genuine sense of freedom & inspiration comes through. It gives you the ability to tap into the kid inside of you, which I feel helps bring out the best in all of us.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My own artistic journey has been one of metamorphosis and I have repeatedly explored the butterfly motif as a widely recognized and accessible symbol. I most often create murals or sculptural “Butterfly Oasis” installations, blending light, color, and texture into a kaleidoscopic canvas mirroring integration and diversity for social and cultural engagement. All of my art is created to be a catalyst to inspire others to reach for and attain their highest potential.

I’m most proud of the journey of my life and how one thing leads to the other. The evolution, the lessons, the trials you overcome. I look back to check in and I see how the roads we take, the ups and downs, the falls and the climbs all are so essential to this moment and it’s beautiful. I’m proud of not giving up. All the people I have met, the cities I lived in and cultures I have encountered that enriched my life and at the same time, the lives of others. I’m proud of it because I have embraced every moment and enjoyed every piece of it. I’m proud of what I have built and I am committed to what makes my heart feel alive and where I can be used as an instrument of connectivity, creativity and inspiration.

I got to where I am today because I have stayed consistent. I like to stay focused by continuing to learn and explore. I’m dedicated to my art career and I take it seriously. I have a purpose and a responsibility to share with the world. It hasn’t been an easy path but when you love something and you feel you have a mission and purpose, you keep moving forward and you gain strength and wisdom along the way which is part of the circle of life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend is only in town for a week, we have a lot to squeeze in! On the first day we would wake up and walk to Urth Cafe for some coffee, then take a little walk through Beverly Hills Park. They have a walking path with a beautiful garden and I would give them a little walking tour around those beautiful homes. Then, on our way back, stop by Zinc on Melrose and have a little breakfast/lunch and walk around the shops on Melrose and The Pacific Design Center. For dinner, there is this amazing sushi place called Umeda, we would wrap up the day there.

The next day I would take her to the Santa Monica Pier and enjoy the beach. We would ride bikes to Venice, have a little walk around Abbot Kinney and watch the sunset on the sand.

Another day we would head downtown to visit The Broad and have brunch at Manuela’s. After brunch, we would check out Hauser & Wirth Gallery and the beautiful art scene in downtown, take her to my friend PRIME’s art studio, go to the Row and have dinner and drinks at Bavel or Bestia.

A hike through Griffith Park and up to the Observatory is a beautiful place to visit when in Los Angeles. That day, we will go visit a couple of artist studios that are located in Los Feliz. I love visiting D’ Ceramics, the studio of a Puerto Rican Ceramics Artist who is always working on beautiful new and one of a kind pieces. On our way back we could have early dinner and drinks at this amazing restaurant called Antico Nuovo. They make the bread there and they have a delicious duck liver pate – yum – as well as great wine and pasta.

Malibu is always a good idea! We would spend the whole day at Paradise Cove and probably even spend the night there so we can hang out in the area and enjoy the ocean.

One of the days I would definitely take her to my studio which is in the valley and give her a tour. We would eat at one of my favorite hole in the wall restaurants that are in North Hollywood.
On our way back home, a little stop at In-N-Out of course and come home to have some drinks in the front yard and enjoy the afternoon.

The following day we could walk to Larchmont and have breakfast at Sam’s Bagels and then go to the Korean Market that’s on Western to buy some fresh crab. They have these amazing fish tanks and it’s crab season! After that, we will come home and enjoy the day in the pool with good music and friends.

And on a Sunday, we go explore the Farmers Market on Larchmont and have breakfast there or at Le Pain Quotidien. Then go to LACMA to enjoy the afternoon..
I would definitely take her to the Hollywood Bowl for a concert to wrap up her visit.

If she had a couple of more days I would take her to Paso Robles and enjoy Hope Wines. The owners are amazing hosts! The winery is beautiful and the wine is delicious, but the drive is glorious.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that have been along my journey that have had such an important influence on me. I feel that having good mentors makes a significant impact on your life. I was very fortunate to have amazing teachers from a young age. I was born and raised in Panamá, a very small country in Central America. I started my career as a dancer and I was trained by the most creative, bold, strong and brilliant women in my country. These women have grown to be First Lady’s, Chief of Staff, Ambassadors, as well as leaders in the Art world and Medical field. I wanted to be just like them! It was always so inspiring and I strive to be as extraordinary as they were. They taught me to work hard, practice, feel my movement, and think outside of the box while dreaming big and chasing those dreams with conviction. I believe these women truly planted all of the seeds in me that are now blooming. I have a little bit of each one of them in everything I do and I am eternally grateful for all they gave me at such a young age.
