We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Alexander-Erber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I’ve always been entrepreneurial since I was very young and always worked hard to create things. I was involved with hotels / pubs many years ago and via these we would promote and tour bands. I always loved that involvement in the music industry. So fast forward when the planets aligned to start a music company – it all just made perfect sense.

This company was formed approximately seven years ago. However, many years prior, when my son picked up a pair of drumsticks, we could tell instantly he was going to be one of the greats and he ended up on Australia’s Got Talent (a TV show similar to America’s Got Talent). When he came off the show, after nearly winning it, we ended up putting him in the studio with several well-known musicians and they made an incredible rock album. This was in 2014, and when I went to shop the album around the US and Australia nobody was interested in rock music, so I thought stuff this I’ll do it myself, and that’s how Golden Robot Records was born.

The idea of the name came from a small porcelain statue of a gold robot that I had given my son, Jagger, and his band when they came out of the studio after making this first album. So, when it came time to name the company, I saw the gold robot statue sitting on a speaker and decided that Golden Robot Records was the perfect name, and the rest is history.

We now have 12 international record labels with more than 400 bands the best PR, marketing, and distribution in the world. It’s important to me that everything we do is different. It’s vital that we are entrepreneurial every day and we look at things differently and approach things differently so the bands that are signed to us get a level of service and a level of commitment that they won’t get anywhere else. That’s what sets us apart from other record labels and I’m very proud of this.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Operating an international business in 2022 is not easy by any stretch of the imagination but you need to have vision, passion, finances, and an incredible self-belief. You need to match that with an excellent game plan, ideas, and drive.

Firstly, you need to have the vision about what you want to achieve. Secondly, you have to surround yourself with the A-team – this helps you get to where you want to go. But what needs to set you apart is your relentless pursuit of your dream and your relentless pursuit of changing the industry and making sure, as in our case, that we’re building a worldwide global family of rock ‘n’ roll artists and bands.

The music and entertainment industry can be very tough, but we set ourselves apart by making sure everything we do is done properly and if, for whatever reason, there’s a mistake, we apologise and fix it and move forward and learn from it. We have some incredible bands and artists we work with on the labels and that inspires us every day to get their music out to the world and to as many ears as possible.

You’re always thinking of new ways to promote the Golden Robot brand because when we promote our brand it promotes the music and the artists. Recently we started up a sports and entertainment division of the company and we are sponsoring UFC fighters and athletes around the world. This is an incredible new path for us as it’s getting our music out to a whole new legion of fans globally.

We’re always testing the boundaries on how to do things better. Better distribution, better PR, better marketing. We tweak every day and make sure whatever we do is in the best possible interest of the company, and its artists and bands.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

My favourite spots in Los Angeles without a doubt are the Jewish delis. I can never go past Canters on Fairfax and Factors on Pico. They are the best without a doubt. I do love that stretch of road that goes down South Beverley Drive in Beverley Hills. There are some fantastic restaurants across those few streets, but probably one of my favourite places is driving on a Sunday down the Pacific Coast Highway and ending up at Nobu in Malibu. If I’m on a Harley I love to go down to Neptune’s Net, also in Malibu but a bit further down the highway.

My fav bars are all along the strip in West Hollywood ending up at Barneys Beanery. The best thing about LA is the nostalgia and the history especially in the entertainment industry – who ate and drank where – it’s very cool. I love Cafe 101 but I’m not sure if it’s still open or not.

The best thing about Los Angeles is you can go out to do one thing and end up doing something else. You end up going for lunch and then you end up finding a bar or going for dinner and finding a club It’s a very cool environment and there’s always something new to do. Entertaining in Los Angeles is the best – much better than other American cities. I really enjoy the atmosphere, the weather, and the service. And really you can get anything in LA – from Mexican to Spanish to Chinese. It’s all done very well, with an LA twist.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Being an entrepreneur, you’re very much used to working on your own, so I don’t necessarily have somebody in my inner circle that I look up to. I’ve been alone business-wise for much of my journey, however that being said there is no way in the world I would be in this position without my incredible wife who has been supportive throughout the years and has always had my back, no matter what. And recently my son started working for the company and that’s been an extra level of comfort to have a family member working with me daily. I would also say that I have an incredible team throughout the world that I truly enjoy working with. Many of them have been with me for years so I’m very lucky to have assembled such a great bunch of people that share my vision, foresight, and passion. I feel very lucky indeed.

The number one thing that always drives me and is most important in my life is the ability to believe in myself. I’ve had this from a very young age. You have to believe in everything you do. You have to believe that tomorrow, when you wake up, it’ll be a better day. So, no matter how stressed you feel, no matter what dramas are unfolding, you can always move forward and get through it. I’ve always had this uncanny ability to believe in myself and get through any situation. It’s very important – especially when you’ve got a lot of money on the line, you’re creating something new, and you’re responsible for a team of people and their wages. Certainly, in this business you’re also responsible for many artists and their careers.

Passion, integrity, and commitment are so important in life, and especially in business. But the one thing that I look for over and above everything else from my staff and anybody that I work with is loyalty – loyalty is everything to me.
