We had the good fortune of connecting with Marquelle Ferrette and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marquelle, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My name is Marquelle Ferrette and I am from the greater Los Angeles area just on the border of Inglewood. I am half Korean (maternally) and half Trinidadian (paternally). My family is considered a working middle class. Growing up I was ALWAYS in the kitchen. My mother (Cookie, Rest in Love) was always cooking breakfast lunch and dinner everyday for me and my 9 siblings. In my family we have a birthday every month so we bought cake A LOT! For me, tasting cake from different bakeries was just the beginning. I began to take notice of what I liked and what my family like or why we didn’t like about each and every cake. It had gotten to a point when I was in middle or maybe high school that I began to take an interest in making cakes/ cupcakes so that my mom wouldn’t have to buy cake anymore. And to my surprise my family loved it every time I made a cake. So, I began to do it more often. Of course like everyone I always went for the boxed cakes in my local grocery stores. I would watch shows like Cake Boss and The Next Great British Baker on tv to get ideas and find inspiration. I still do to this day. When I graduated high school, I admit I kinda gave up on it because I wanted to be either a dancer or kinesiologist (a sports physical therapist). I went on to complete 3 years of college and started a family of my own and was working full time at The Home Depot (I still work there by the way). And one day I decided I wanted to make a random cake. A German chocolate cake and it came out so perfect. I sent a picture to one of my brothers and he showed his coworkers the photo and from there that’s when I began my cake journey. The impact that my upbringing has on me is that I have the drive to always move forward. If I fail at something, I take note of my mistakes and fix the problem. My mother was the most driven person and I get it from her. She would come up with dinner ideas in her sleep and we all thought she was crazy until we tried her concoction and loved it. I strive for excellence in every single bake because it pleases me to see all my clients happy. I am who I am today because of my parents and my best friends (Auri and Nikki). They are the creators and they pushed me to become the creator that I am today. They were and still are my main support system. When I have days that I do want to quit they always remind me that I am a Boss, A Queen and I will succeed. I’m no stranger to hard work. I have been working since I graduated high school. I work hard so I can provide for my son just like any other parent. He loves it when his mommy bakes. I love my craft and I am every so thankful to God that he blesses me everyday to create new things. I love being in the kitchen because my mom loved it. Putting a smile on others faces with my products is all I could ever ask for.

What sets me apart from others is that I am dedicated to my clients. As an in home baker, quality, design and above all freshness are my priorities for each bake. I get excited about each and every opportunity I have to create a cake or cookies or both. Each event is unique and every design supersedes the previous. Practice make perfect and I only get better each time. Trial and error is how I got where I am today. I admit there are days where everything goes perfect and then the next day nothing goes right. It’s times like those that drive me to push myself and keep going. Baking is never easy. Nothing is easy period. As I said before practice makes perfect. No artist is perfect right off the bat. But depending on the art each piece is beautiful no matter how imperfect or unbalanced it may be. I never back down from a challenge. Each new project brings its difficulties but having free reign to create and design makes it all worth it. I overcome the challenges by pushing myself and getting advice from my main supporters who remind me that I can do whatever I’m working on and just having their support energizes me to keep going. The list that I have learned along the way is that art has no limit. Creativity has no guidelines. Any artist in any field has no boundaries as to what makes their art art. Each new piece or creation is a masterpiece in itself. Rules are meant to be broken in art, if they weren’t broken couldn’t really be considered art? What I want the world to know about my brand is that it thrives on love. My family, my best friends and all of my supporters, they drive me to do better. Seeing my mother and father work hard to provide for me and my siblings where I get my drive from. I used to think that I was poor growing up but now I realize that I was very rich indeed. I named my brand Crafty Confections because I want the people to imagine the most unique of designs no matter what the bake is. I love my family, my friends and all of my supporters.they keep me Crafty!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from the great LA area. There are lots of amenities for me and my friends to enjoy. If I don’t cook at home. We have a large choice of fast food stops or if we drive a little further we have restaurants like Olive Garden, or BJ’s. We would go to the beach (Santa Monica or Redondo Beach). We can go to any of the numerous parks in our area. If we wanted a thrill, a drive to Six Flags, Knott’s Berry Farm or Disneyland are a few hours away. The Pike in Long Beach Is amazing. You have the Aqua of the Pacific, numerous restaurants to choose from and plenty of shopping. Culver City and Del Amo mall are within 30 minutes of my location. And we have plenty of movie theaters in the area for different experiences (dine in, drive up etc).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First off I want to shoutout my two best friends who support me the most, Auriana and Necole. Without their support I probably would be stuck in the twilight zone. I would like to thank my family for always being willing to try my bakes before hand. All the bakers and content creators on social media that I follow. My son, for always telling me I am the best baker ever (mommy loves you Chase). My dad for his valuable input. And last but not least, My Mom. Mom I miss you so much and I thank you for passing on that talent for cooking/baking to me. I push myself harder everyday not just for my son but for you as well. I love you all.
