We had the good fortune of connecting with Tami Daks + Lauren Gwartz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tami Daks + Lauren Gwartz, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
We won’t pretend for a minute that Interior Design + Event Planning is as important as what our health care workers and educators are doing right now for our community, but when the pandemic hit, we wanted to do something small to help too! No time like the present to add a third “side” to our business, right? Last May (starting with Mother’s Day), we began creating custom curated gifting experiences in a BOX to allow new ways to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and special milestones such as babies being born and micro-weddings. What we didn’t realize is that our clientele really wanted to find a way to send some love to a friend they hadn’t seen in a while or a special gift to a sick family member who was in need of some extra care (in the current climate). Our “in a BOX” line (as we call it) has become a pampered product as well as a way to celebrate, and we like to say that with each Los Angeles delivery, we are “spreading joy … one BOX at a time!”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our mission, in starting our business, was to find a way to differentiate ourselves from the many Interior Design firms in LA. We also felt strongly about sticking with our clients after a project is complete. Which in truth is because by that point we have become like family. We love creating spaces for our clients that fit their personal aesthetic and overall desires for how they want to feel when they are at home. Our interior clients can also call us any time to bring in linens, rentals, and even top LA vendors (like personal chefs and awesome entertainers) when hosting in their home.
Getting to this point was not easy! At first, perspective clients didn’t understand how the two sides work as one. They would hire us to either design the look of their home or plan their child’s Bar Mitzvah (but not both). A growing trust between us and those that we work with helped us to get to this point. What is most important is that we never gave up. We believed that Interior Design + Event Planning go hand in hand, and we were determined to show those that said we should focus on just one thing that we could do it all!
In case you or someone you know is looking to hire – Our specialties are high end residential interior design (Lauren) + at home intimate gatherings with beautiful attention to detail (Tami). For our best clients, we also love to plan large milestone events at home or in other incredible locations as well as design their vacation homes too!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We grew up in LA, and we absolutely love this city! So this question is difficult only because there are so many options and so many places to go, people to see, and things to explore!
Hmm let’s see, here’s a list of our favorites (in no particular order) … Staples Center for a Lakers / Clippers game, Malibu Seafood, Jon and Vinny’s, Disneyland (of course), the Santa Monica Pier, the Grove, and for something more low key the Brentwood Country Mart, In n Out, Sugarfish, and karaoke in Korea Town … just to name a few!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We grew up with great role models … A hard-working mom boss and a creative dad that taught us the sky is the limit (who we still are lucky to work with today)! Shout out also to everyone we have worked for and with who have pushed us professionally, taught us what we know, and challenged us to do even more!
