We had the good fortune of connecting with Marshea Walton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marshea, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
When you’re doing what you love, what you’re passionate about and what you truly believe in giving up is never an option. It’s important to always remember why you started. Your “why” is your mission statement. There will always be people in the world who are better, smarter, have more resources that make you feel like there’s no room for you and what you have to offer, but there’s only 1 you. Use it to your leverage. Rework your vision, elevate it, advance it, rebrand it, but never give up on it. It takes 10 years to become an overnight success. If you give up you’ll never finish your success story. You can go down as somebody who kept going or the nobody who quit.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Marshea Chanel Squared provides fashion for the girl who doesn’t need an occasion to get fly. This is for the girl who serves looks daily. She doesn’t wait until Friday to deliver, she has a fit for everyday of the week. In a world full of “instagram boutiques” I was really in my head about what people would say or if they would support. But, I know my vision best and I couldn’t convince others to believe me if I didn’t believe in myself. I know the plans I have for my business and longevity is one of them.

What sets me apart is my customer service and professionalism. I’m not just trying to sell ” things” I’m trying to build relationships. I engage with my customers, I ensure what they order is what they get. I’m timely, honest and respectful. A lot of e-commerce clothing businesses lack that nowadays and it definitely makes me proud that I’ve separated myself from the rest in that aspect.

Starting my business certainly came with challenges, because I don’t come from a business oriented lineage. My family still doesn’t understand what I do or why. My friends get it, because the girls that get it, get it. But no I seriously just took everything one day and one task at a time. It sounds cliche, but it was the most effective. Youtube was my best friend. Anything you want to know you can find on google or find through good connections.

I’ve learned to not compare. To utilize what makes me different and work it. You lose valuable time looking to see what’s happening to the left and right of you. You lose authenticity too. You shouldn’t want your brand to look like anyone else’s, because it’s no longer special after that.

What I want the world to know about MC Squared, is that how we started is farrrr from how we’ll finish. There is so much elevation and evolution in store. I’m sure of it, so stay tuned and watch us grow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I was born and raised in Newark, Nj just 35 mins outside of NYC. While it’s easy to list a bunch of fancy places from the city we have gems of our own here so I’ll start locally.

Little Tijuana 538 Market St, Newark, NJ 07105 or El Mexicano 1293 Main Ave, Clifton, NJ 07011
Mexican food restaurant. Cute, fun, photo op spots for a good girls night. We love a selfie.

Fornos of Spain – 47 Ferry St, Newark, NJ 07105
I came here a lot growing up and the stuffed salmon, garlic shrimp and sangria never gets old.

Top’s Diner – 500 Passaic Ave, East Newark, NJ 07029
Best for breakfast, brunch or lunch in my opinion. It has changed a lot over the years, but still good eats.

Newark Moonlight Cinema – 220 Orange St, Newark, NJ 07103
A black owned drive-in movie theater experience.

Bowlero – multiple locations
Food, drinks, bowling, arcade games and laser tag. This is everywhere, but we have them here and it’s still a good time.

We have Branch Brook Park for skating, Six Flags when the weather breaks and tons of good local takeout spots. Our girls week would be full of eating and activity.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God and my circle. They have truly been around for it all. The love and support is unwavering.
