We had the good fortune of connecting with Martin Durazo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risk is central to the human condition as an artist not just for myself, but anyone who decides to make a mark who’s taking a risk hopefully those risks pay off and even when they don’t, that is how we learn as an artist, and as well for my other business ventures The risk usually involves moving away from convention and what is expected
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I received my degree in art and English from Pitzer college, and a master of fine arts from UCLA. I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by a community of educators and artists that guided me and help me develop as an artist in return. I do what I can in order to promote other artists and students to also develop my work is a constant exploration every work a new song I am very happy to say that I am constantly seeing things in the world that inspire me to continue to create
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have been painting sculpting, creating with ceramics printmaking video work and installation for the past 30 years maybe more I have always been interested in developing aesthetics around human behavior that is skewed from the norm. A term that I am experimenting with now. Is this idea of post vandalism meaning that I am curious with materials and gestures that are classically associated with vandalism, graffiti damage intervention, and somehow bringing them into a contemporary art dialogue
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate the shout out to all my past, concurrent students, my family, my extended family of friends, and Artist colleagues, and anyone else who has shown me love and given me support throughout the years
