We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin M. Jacobson, Esq. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After graduating law school and passing the bar exam, I started getting clients on my own from referrals in the industry and decided to start my own firm. As my client list grew, I realized I had more freedom than if I worked for someone else, and I was getting to do things I wouldn’t have done as a first-year associate at a larger firm, such as interface with clients and handle business development. I really enjoy the CEO role in addition to the attorney role and have grown my business exponentially over the past 10 years.

What should our readers know about your business?
As an attorney and entrepreneur, I spend my days protecting my clients and empowering them to make strategic career decisions. Much of my work involves legacy music catalogues and recapturing copyright ownership for songwriters and their heirs as my knowledge of classic music and current industry practices places me in a unique position to protect and revitalize older catalogues. In addition, I just wrote a book for independent musicians called, Don’t Get Screwed! How to Protect Yourself as an Independent Musician, which explains what musicians need to know about copyright, royalties, and most-needed contracts, as well as pitfalls to avoid. In addition to my law practice, I also have a company called Indie Artist Resource which provides contract templates and educational resources to independent musicians.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to a tasty and healthy restaurant, and we’d check out a fantastic concert at an outdoor venue like the Hollywood Bowl. We’d also spend some time by the coast, as you can’t visit LA without some time near the beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom’s unconditional love, support, and teaching was instrumental in my success.
