We had the good fortune of connecting with Martina Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Martina, what do you want people to remember about you?
I’m passionate about building community and connection through creativity. I just celebrated our 10 Anniversary and looking back, I feel so grateful to all that I have met and the friendships and connections that we have fostered.

I want to be an example to not give up even when things get really tough, not to be afraid, to see people as new friends when they walk in the door.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Looking back, I realized that I have always been a self starter and extremely hard worker. I’m not sure how some of the crazy ideas came into my head and why I was compelled to try them, especially venturing into areas I knew very little about. If I “felt’ it, I had to try it. Each challenge has brought a wealth of knowledge.

Was it easy? Heck no, but that’s what made it challenging and interesting. I’m grateful that my parents always encouraged us to be involved in music. I think that gave me a foundation for everything that I tried. I overcame my challenges by doing, experimenting, trying, moving forward one step at a time, even when I felt like throwing in the towel.

At My Creative Outlet, I want people to know that we believe in the power of community, creativity and connection. I feel that we are more than a craft studio-we are a joyful and welcoming space where all ages can find inspiration and feel at home. We really encourage at least 10 hugs a day. After a workshop, it’s so fun to see everyone hugging it out and leaving with smiles on their faces. That’s what gets me so JAZZED!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a tough one since I’m always working and don’t go out much. In Chatsworth I would take them hiking, do wine tasting at Canto VI or Handbrewed Beer. We’d go to the beach and go to Paradise Cove. On a Sunday I’d take them to Concerts in the Park in Woodland Hills. The wakiest would be to go to San Pedro to see James Intveld and play Chickenshit Bingo.

Better yet, leave town and head to Cambria for the week!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am without our customers, makers, teachers, but most of all, our creative team of volunteers. They help bring new ideas to life and help with some of the mundane tasks of keeping a shop going. They continue to show up, give their time and talents, they are the heart of the shop.
