We had the good fortune of connecting with Maryann Youssef and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maryann, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
If I had to hone in one word that has helped me succeed, it would be discipline. I’ve learned over the years and throughout the ups and downs of life that discipline keeps me on track. While it can feel like discipline is the enemy of fun and enjoyment, I actually think it’s the path to feeling free and in control! Some days or obstacles are challenging; it can be difficult to ride the wave of motivation day in and day out. This applies to everything from exercise and diet, to studying for an exam – etc. Of course there are times I’d rather sleep in than workout! But feelings follow actions and I know if I can just stick to my schedule I’m going to feel much better off – and guilt-free. I write a to-do list at the beginning of every week full of appointments, meetings, and things I would like to get achieve on a given day. I’ve tried so many times to switch to fully digital calendaring but can’t get used to it! I’m an old-fashioned pen and paper gal. I also keep a pretty strict sleeping schedule – early to bed, early to rise. Reading plenty and listening to growth-mindset podcasts (like The Tim Ferriss Show) have helped me to understand the important of discipline and craft a life that is hopefully conducive to more success! It’s important to be adaptive to learning new things that can help optimize everyday life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Endeavor Health & Fitness is all about training for independence! Endeavor provides targeted strength training for women who are starting to feel that their bodies aren’t quite keeping up with their lively spirits. We offer individual training programs delivered virtually in group or private sessions to meet you where you are give you practical results to ease your daily routine. Whether it’s strength training, mobility, injury rehabilitation – or tailored yoga training, our goal is to provide you with personalized training that will increase your confidence and maintain your independence. I’m really excited to continue expanding and changing the paradigm of how we age. We have some great coaches on board with wonderful training and expertise in their field and plan to add additional group classes for both strength training and yoga – ready to bring in more clients! Launching Endeavor has been an amazing and humbling journey. I don’t think I was prepared for how big the leap was from working for someone else to running my own business. There is *always* something to do and it is not easy to manage all the components! But boy, do I love it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love giving people a tour of southern California! What an amazing place we get to call home! A few of the things that make me happy are food, live shows, and nature so a healthy dose of each is usually at the heart of every itinerary. Some of the must-dos on my list: pick up a sandwich from Bay Cities and picnic on the lawn at the Getty Museum; hike around Will Rogers State Park; drive down PCH through Malibu and hike Temescal Falls – stop at Neptune’s Net on the way back; have late night drinks and snacks at Alibi Room; eat donuts from Sidecar donuts as often as possible; check out a show at the Hollywood Bowl; see who’s performing at the Comedy Store; paddle board or kayak in Long Beach the head to Ballast point for wonderfully peaceful views of the Marina; grab some friends and snacks and rent a duffy boat for an afternoon; morning trail run to watch the sunrise (I know this is work but it’s so peaceful) – followed by brunch at Lunetta on Pico – the possibilities never end! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my dad was the motivation to start my business, so it’s been natural to include my family in everything I do. I would be absolutely nowhere without the love and support of my family – parents, brother, and husband. Each of my loved ones plays a special role. I am extremely blessed to have grown up in a home where the sky is the limit. My parents had high expectations of my older brother and I and knew just when to nurture and when to push. This gave us confidence in ourselves and abilities, as well as an encouraging environment to see what we can do. It’s really special to have parents who fully and truly believed nothing was (and still is) out of reach for my brother and me. On that note, my brother was always such a smart person and high achiever – I had to catch up! We have such a special relationship, he’s my friend, confidant, and go-to person when I need no holds barred problem solving and advice for my business and life in general. None of this would be possible without an extremely supportive husband. I was ready to exit my previous job and my timetable for leaving got shorter and shorter as frustration grew. The timing wasn’t ideal, our finances weren’t in the shape we’d planned – but he believed in me the whole way and never voiced any objection. His only request was that if I’m going to do it, to do it all the way. He pushes me to set higher goals, aim for more than I set out to do and never lets me quit (though I’ve tried!). I’m very fortunate! Above everything, no one in my family laughed or flinched when I said I was going to leave my steady career and jump into Endeavor. It’s hard to even convey just how critical that was in building my confidence and belief that I can do this.
