We had the good fortune of connecting with Mateus Hueb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mateus, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Moving to Los Angeles was a pivotal step in my filmmaking journey. The city’s vibrant film industry provided a fertile ground for networking and connecting with individuals who shared my passion, allowing me to immerse myself in a community of like-minded creatives and cultivate invaluable relationships that propelled my career forward.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on numerous productions, both in Brazil and the US. These experiences have provided me with invaluable insights into different cultural contexts and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Currently, I am deeply engrossed in two major projects. Firstly, I am in the process of producing a documentary titled “Belong,” which holds great significance to me. Through this film, I aim to shed light on diverse stories that often go unnoticed, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and celebrating our differences.

In addition to the documentary, I am also engaged in the exhilarating task of adapting a play. This endeavor allows me to breathe new life into existing stories and present them in fresh, thought-provoking ways that captivate audiences.

One aspect that truly drives and inspires me is the exploration of diversity in storytelling. I am passionate about delving into narratives that challenge societal norms and shed light on underrepresented voices. By showcasing perspectives that are not commonly explored, I strive to foster empathy, promote inclusivity, and ignite meaningful conversations through my work.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have had so far and for the chance to pursue my passion. With each project, I strive to push the boundaries of storytelling and create films that resonate deeply with audiences. I am excited about what the future holds and eager to continue my journey in bringing captivating and diverse stories to life on screen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Two of my favorite places in LA are the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and the Los Feliz Theater. Both of these theaters hold a special significance for me as they are part of the American Cinematheque, an organization that has a special place in my heart. In fact, I had the incredible opportunity to intern there for a year, which deepened my appreciation for film culture and the magic of the big screen.

When it comes to satisfying my taste buds, one of my go-to spots is My Vegan Gold in Silverlake. Their delicious plant-based cuisine never fails to impress me. LA is one of the most vegan-friendly cities I’ve ever been to!!!

Additionally, I enjoy exploring the Los Feliz Flea Market on Saturdays. Not only do they have an incredible selection of unique items, but the food trucks there are simply amazing. There’s another store in LA that I absolutely adore: Virgil Normal. Their collection of clothes is not only stylish but also reflects a unique and captivating aesthetic.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a filmmaker, I’ve always been drawn to visionary directors who have left a profound impact on the world of cinema. Filmmakers like Sofia Coppola, Agnès Varda, Jane Campion, Carlos Saura, Lars von Trier, and Kléber Mendonça Filho have been major sources of inspiration for me.

I consider myself a cinephile before anything else, and I believe that watching movies has been an invaluable learning experience for me. Through the passage of time, I have gained immense knowledge by immersing myself in the works of these talented filmmakers.

While it’s important to learn from these influential filmmakers, it’s equally crucial to develop my own personal vision and style. By blending their influences with my own unique ideas and experiences, I strive to carve out my own path in the world of filmmaking.

As a passionate cinephile and filmmaker, I believe that the power of movies lies in their ability to inspire, provoke thought, and bring diverse perspectives to the forefront. I’m constantly learning and growing through the medium of film, and I look forward to continuing my journey of artistic exploration.
