Meet Matt Hartman | Writer, Director & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Hartman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success isn’t just about hitting a milestone or getting recognition. When my fiance and I produced our independent comedy series, Open to It, of course we wanted it to be watched, but what was more important than numbers was its impact with those who watched it. For me, it’s about creating something that sticks with people—something that makes them feel seen, understood, or just makes them laugh when they need it most. When someone watches Open to It and says, “Wow, that’s my life,” or when they just laugh so hard they forget their problems for a minute, that’s success. It’s also about leaving the creative space better than I found it—by working with underrepresented voices and making sure we’re telling stories that truly reflect the world. Success is making things that matter, with people you love working with. And if you can have fun along the way, even better!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is about telling bold, funny, and unapologetically queer stories that don’t fit the traditional mold. What sets me apart is the way I lean into the humor of life’s awkward moments, especially in my current project, *Open to It*, a comedy about a gay couple experimenting with an open relationship. I’m most excited about how it pushes boundaries while staying relatable and accessible. I didn’t get here overnight, though. Growing up as a disabled queer kid in Orange County and later navigating college with crutches, I faced a lot of isolation. It wasn’t easy, but it shaped my resilience. I found my first creative outlet in a film club, where I had to literally push myself uphill on crutches to get to meetings. That experience taught me the importance of pushing through challenges. After graduating from UCLA’s film school, I worked in various production roles on shows like *2 Broke Girls* and *Siren*, all while developing my own voice as a writer, director, and producer. Along the way, I’ve learned that risk is necessary—whether it’s sharing a personal story or tackling a subject that makes people uncomfortable. Staying true to my vision has been key, and collaboration with talented creatives has always been a big part of that process. My brand is all about celebrating differences, telling underrepresented stories, and making people feel seen. At the end of the day, I want the world to know that my work is about more than just laughs—though those are important—it’s about creating a space for authentic, diverse experiences to shine on screen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d make sure they got the best of LA without any of the clichés. First, we’d start off at *Akbar* and *Precinct*, two of my favorite gay bars that not only know how to throw a good time but also give back to the queer arts community. Whether it’s a drag show or just a night on the dance floor, it’s the perfect way to kick off an LA trip. For balance, I’d take them hiking in Griffith Park or the San Gabriel Mountains, where we can catch some stunning views and pretend like we’re not in the middle of a massive city.
Food-wise, it’s all about LA’s unbeatable Mexican cuisine. We’d hit *Salsa and Beer*—seriously, the best Mexican food in the Valley—and then swing by *Guisados* for tacos because, when in LA, why not sample all the Mexican food you can? For something a little different, we’d grab fresh fish at *Malibu Seafood* and spend a laid-back day at El Matador Beach—can’t beat the combo of fresh seafood and a quiet spot by the ocean.
For some culture with a twist, we’d visit the *La Brea Tar Pits*. It’s not your typical museum experience, but that’s what makes it cool—seeing fossils in the middle of LA is pretty surreal. To top off the trip, we’d have to catch a movie at *Cinespia* at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery or see a show at the *Hollywood Bowl* or *Greek Theatre*. There’s something magical about seeing a movie or live music outdoors in these iconic venues—it’s classic LA without being overdone. Finally, we’d wrap it all up with some paddle boating at *Echo Park Lake*, I don’t care if it’s cheesy, it’s a perfect way to wind down and soak in the laid-back side of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a huge shoutout to Jason Caceres, one of the absolute pillars of *Open to It*. Jason is not only one of our lead actors, but he’s also a total powerhouse behind the scenes. Tireless doesn’t even begin to describe him—whether he’s bringing incredible energy to his character or stepping up to help secure funding for the show, he’s constantly pushing things forward. He’s the kind of person who makes everyone’s job easier just by being around, but don’t let his fun, easygoing vibe fool you—he’s as professional as they come. Honestly, Jason doesn’t just show up; he elevates everything. I’m so grateful for his passion, dedication, and all the heart he’s poured into this project. He’s a true partner in every sense, and *Open to It* wouldn’t be the same without him!
