We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Hausmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work and life balance have drastically changed for me over time, especially over the past four years with the birth of my oldest daughter. I’m married with a two and a four-year-old. It’s important to split your time between family and work. They say you must write every day to be successful. That’s tough to do when you have two kids who want to go in the pool, play, and go out to eat with you. Life is balance. You must make time for what is important. It changes day to day, and you must find the importance within each day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been an artist in some sort of capacity from writing, directing, or making props for TV/film. I’m most proud of all the screenplays that I’ve written and a new website, mhscripts.com, that I’m about to launch with a writing reel and movie posters for all my screenplays. I’ve always wanted to be a part of filmmaking from my earliest days when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was hooked. Since then, I’ve had a successful career in the art/prop department while I kept writing screenplays when I had any free time. Filmmaking is not easy. Sometimes you can be living from check to check, plus it’s sometimes difficult to put yourself out there. Over the years, I’ve learned to not take anything personally. If you like my writing, great, if not, it’s not for everyone. I write in many genres, but comedy is where I feel like I excel. I have a specific comedy sense of humor and voice like the tones of the 80’s. Some people are into it, and some are not.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to the Magic Castle. People from out of town also love the experience. The ambiance is cool and it’s unique to Hollywood. During past visits, going to Six Flags, Universal Studios, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour, Lego Land, the Academy Museum, and Disneyland are always favorites. Those places keep you young and are always a good time. I’m always down to take a day trip to Santa Barbara to do some wine tasting. Or Los Olivos or Solvang. The culture is much different up there than LA. There’s an excellent vineyard outside of Solvang, Dementria, that’s awesome. It overlooks mountains and is very secluded. Another cool spot is Cornell Winery off Kanon road. Great place to relax. I prefer rooftop places around LA like High in Venice or Calabra in Santa Monica where you can overlook LA and the beach. You never know what kind of people you’ll run into in Santa Monica and Venice. Marina del Rey is also fun. I like to take my bike and roll between Mariner’s Cove, Tony P’s, the Warehouse, and LA Press which is a cool juice/coffee spot right on the dock. Old Town Pasadena is also fun to bounce around. The nice thing about LA is the difference of people and architecture in these cities. It’s nice just to feel it out day to day and have a relaxing day close to the beach or be able to see the cool architecture of a different city.

A day trip to Catalina Island is also exceptional where you can eat right on the beach at Descanso or go to this out in the cut breakfast spot, the Sandtrap. Malibu is also full, there’s some cool coffee shops around the pier. Also, Moonshadows, Duke’s, and Gladestone’s are fun places overlooking the ocean.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It all starts at home. I give this shoutout to Katie Hausmann who constantly helps me with ideas, loglines, synopsis, and plot points. Her encouragement keeps me going, even when she’s stuck at home with the kids by herself. If it wasn’t for her, I would have not had the time to write two feature films, storyboard another feature film, write a short, create a writing reel, and develop a new website. I’d also like to shoutout Paul Major for his constant help with the writing reel and website. Also, my friends who helped make the voiceovers for the reel: Paul Major, Ari Joffee, Keelia Flinn, James Wilson, Greg Manke, Sarah Collette, Roy Williams Jr., Alex Gabel, Olayide Olayiwola, Josh Hargrave, Randin Hargrave, Erik Carpenter, and AJ Cast.
