We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Cazier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think the most beneficial habit I’ve learned to develop in my journey is slowing down and being mindful of my thoughts and taking deliberate actions. My mind can easily go a million miles an hour with all the things I should be doing along with all the ideas I have for the future, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed quickly and start working frantically. It’s not an easy skill to learn, one I’m constantly working on (I actually hired a life coach to help me) but it’s been so worth it!
Another habit that goes hand in and hand with that is taking time for myself. Burnout is real! I try hard to take time each day to exercise, mediate and reconnect with God and have some time with my family. It’s not always as much time as I’d like, but even a small amount helps rejuvenate me and helps me refocus on the “why” in why I’m doing my business.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our business stands apart from all others because, unlike your run-of-the mill pie shop, our customers bake their own pie. We sell our pie frozen, unbaked (like a frozen pizza, but waaaay better!), so our customers aren’t only getting a great tasting product, they’re getting an experience. They get to experience the anticipation, the smells, and taste of a fresh-baked pie, straight out of their own oven, when they want it.
We love our model because it provides the opportunity to create (and enhance) memorable experiences with the ones we love. Smell and taste are closely linked with memory ……memories of times with your grandmother in her kitchen while she baked, memories of holidays with all your extended family, memories of shared meals with friends while celebrating a new job……. so we love providing this gateway to lasting (and delicious) memories because life really is all about making memories.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first thing I think of is all the places I’d want to take them to eat!! Let’s be honest — that’s the best part of any trip right?!
Breakfast; Stacks, Blue Bowl, Rye Goods
For the perfect picnic at the beach or for a duffy boat ride in Newport Harbor; charcuterie board from The Cheese Block
Lunch / Dinner: Fritto Misto (in Santa Monica), Puesto, Ribbro BBQ, The Stand, Urban Seoul, Porch and Swing, The Anaheim Packing District
Treats: Atomic Creamery, Cream Pan (the Strawberry Croissants), Side Car Donuts, Ruby’s Shake Shack
…… I think we’ve gained 20 lbs now!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course my mom! She’s the one that taught me how to make pies, paved the road with her own pies business, showed me first hand the value of hard work and how to juggle personal life and business life. She’s always chasing her dreams (still to this day) and is always encouraging others to do that same.
My husband and four kids have been nothing short of supportive of me, which means everything! Without their constant love and cheering, I couldn’t do this. They’re always picking me up, helping me stay focused and are my anchor. My gratitude and love for them runs deep.
Last but certainly not least – all my amazing customers who have become like family! If it wasn’t for them and their support and encouragement too, there wouldn’t be a Flaky Apple Pie Co. I can’t thank them enough!!
