We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt McGee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what do you attribute your success to?
Our cocktails taste good. It’s as simple as that. We give people a product that they want to buy again and again.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started out as a bartender and I saw the ingredients going into cocktails and I just thought to myself “these could be so much better!” So I started experimenting with recipes and fresh ingredients and I started testing them out on regulars at the bar. From there, things just sort of grew. I’m a big believer in the philosophy that showing up is half the battle. I enjoy making cocktails that taste good, so that’s what I did. I kept doing it for long enough and eventually someone was like “Hey, I wanna buy that!”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think one of the most unique things about Los Angeles (and California in general) is the sheer amount of diversity in what you can do. Sure New York is a big city with lots of places to eat and lots of shows to see, but can you go snowboarding and surfing in the same day?! Can you enjoy drinks on an outdoor patio in February? Are you less than 30 minutes from the nearest national park? So I guess to answer your question, I’d wake up before dawn, head east to the mountains to snowboard for a few hours, then head down to Venice and surf until it was time to eat. I’d take them to Wabi on Rose – they have great cocktails, a great menu and a really nice wine and sake list there, then probably head to the valley to hit a dive bar to spend the rest of the evening. Only in LA!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who make this machine go. From the bartenders who actually serve our clients, to the drivers who help deliver, to the kitchen manager who tirelessly works to find the right combination of syrups and citruses, to everyone who puts in the effort to source and create our ingredients. Without them The Cocktail Method couldn’t operate.
