We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Eugene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, what do you want people to remember about you?
I don’t want people to remember me as the person who founded Rooftop Tunes (although that would be nice), I want people to remember me as a risk taker. Someone who stepped up to the plate follow their dreams and made it to reality. I want people to remember me as someone who’s brought good back to the communities that I grew up in creating that loving and caring environment. Simply said I want to remember as a successful Entrepreneur.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For as long as I’ve worked I’ve always had a job in retail, these jobs has taught me a few things. It helps showed me that I am a people person. Being able to interact with various people on a daily basis, talking to people about various topics brings me joy. You never know what someone has encounter along their life journey that they’re willing to share with you to help you. It wasn’t always easy, I had to learn how to read people to deliver that grade A customer service. The more comfortable I got talking to the strangers, The more it was preparing me for this role that I’m taking off here at Rooftop Tunes. What I’ve learned and understand is you have to network, market yourself out to different individuals while showing them your dream. You have to sell them it before they will buy in. When I hit the lowest point of my career was back in 2016. I lost my job when I was transferring from up north California back to SoCal. During this time I felt like I was a failure and that I messed up, that nothing was going right. However one thing that I learned was that is all up to me, whether I am successful or not it’s all up to me. That’s when I begin to brainstorm and start to think about different ideas that will help me become a successful entrepreneur. All my life I knew I wanted to own my own business however I always struggled to figure out what niche I wanted to work within. Following graduating school in 2019 I was able to land a job as an assistant manager where I’m able to grow and learn more of the business side. From the budgeting to customer service and even handling sometimes occurring problems. When these problems arise I think how would I handle them within my business how can I make a better brand name to my customers.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting LA for the first time I will have to take them to some of the best food spots. I will make sure they grab an In-N-Out Burger as soon as they land. Then the day begins will go to the LACMA where I can show them the tarp pit and some of the scenery, after I will continue to travel up the road to Fairfax where my friend can shop and witness some of the best stores we have on Fairfax and Melrose. After we get done shopping will stop by sweet chicks on Fairfax and have a chicken sandwich because the food is just so good. Throughout their stay I will show various places that they might have seen on TV, movies that are just so iconic from traveling down to Compton to Inglewood Hollywood all around town. It’s not an LA trip unless you Watch one of our sports teams play from the Clippers to the Lakers. The kings the Rams in the Chargers whatever’s in season we must go see.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people that I can shoutout, but when I think about who helped put that drive within me. I would have to give credit to my mother first and foremost for always allowing me to follow and pursue all my dreams from sports, art and even now with working on this music business. Thank you mom, I love you. What got the ball rolling for me was when I read “It’s all in your head get out of your way” by Russ. This book was broken into three part delusion, persistence and gratitude. I still remember the day I first read this book I started by telling myself I would read one chapter then one chapter then one turn into 3,4, 5 and next thing you know I was completely done with the book. After I finish the book I started to map out my blueprint and started to see what I needed to do to successfully run the marathon. As I continue on this journey through the highs and lows whenever I need reassurance I know I can count on these five people my best friends Delayna, Kyle & Elena, my girlfriend Asia, and my brother Mark. Talking to them always brings me joy and reassures me that I’m doing the right thing. That I’m trying to better my situation while helping those around me.
