We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Serrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, why did you pursue a creative career?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a storyteller. At first, it was writing novels to become a writer. Then it was drawing to become an animator. One day, I decided after the millionth viewing of my Star Wars DVD to check out the other DVD that came in the box which was the bonus materials where I watched, countless hours of behind-the-scenes and making content, and was completely inspired. Then when I was in eighth grade, I went on a class field trip to Universal Studios Hollywood and after riding the first ride of the day, which was the tram tour, my life was forever changed, and I knew from that day on that I wanted to work in Film.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a filmmaker, the stories that I am drawn the most to are the ones where characters want something that they’re never going to get and how they choose to move forward, knowing that information. This is a theme that I did not realize permeated through most of my work until very recently when I was having a conversation with my girlfriend Bree Kish about this. There’s something that fascinates me so much about human desire and how desire can define us and how a human can crumble and bring everyone down with them when they don’t get what they want, or when people show determination in the face of despair.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the San Fernando Valley where there are great Salvadorian places everywhere so I can’t pick one place. I love a good California burrito and love to get them at Que Rico’s or Tacos Manzano. For burgers, you gotta do gold burger at either location. For breakfast burritos go to Corner Cottage in Burbank and get it with sausage (bring cash and come early!) and finally for dessert there are a lot of places but I’m gonna shout out a hidden gem by the name of Slusheeland in North Hollywood. Their cereal shakes are out of this WORLD.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes I would love to shoutout Bambi Moé who has been hugely supportive of me for years and has recently come out with a great book detailing her amazing career at Disney!
