We had the good fortune of connecting with Maureen Burke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maureen, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking has played a big part in my career since the age of 18 when I decided to leave finals in college and go on a tour of Japan with the Vidal Sassoon International Artistic Team. Hence, having my 18th birthday in Tokyo, away from my friends and family, my love for the Beauty Industry began. However, the life experiences that were about to unfold far surpassed what I was learning in school at the time. I was asked to join the tour for dual-purpose as a Model and Makeup Artist. I had been fortunate enough to apprentice the head Makeup Artist for VS giving me the skills I needed to commence a great career path. By risk taking at an early age, I have launched several successful businesses, including and most currently, PPE company, HMUAPAX.com. Simultaneously, I have managed to maintain an accomplished career as a Celebrity Makeup Artist. I have been permanently enrolled in the “school of life” and feel extremely grateful for all of the risks!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a part of the creative collaboration and teamwork are so important in the outcome of any artistic project. Acknowledge that each person on the team brings something of value or they would most probably not be there. Be respectful, show up on time, listen as well as contribute, in a positive manner, to the common creative vision. Also, being able to go with the flow as things evolve during the creative process is imperative.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being that I am a bit partial to NELA, I would recommend a few favorite spots (all “to go” now) In Highland Park, I love Hippo for unique culinary delights and Triple Beam for pizza. Also, Home State for unique Tex Mex tacos (potato tacos and the queso are personal favs) If you love teas and tinctures, Wild Terra is exceptional! All family owned businesses.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Maxine Kroll was the manager and my mentor at the Vidal Sassoon in Chicago where my career. Without her wisdom and guidance I would not be where I am today. She has been a constant roll model throughout my life and has built a very impressive empire of her own, MAXINESALON.com!
