Meet Maurice Tillmon | Actor & Pediatric Registered Nurse

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maurice Tillmon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maurice, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I view risk as an opportunity to explore all of my fears. Each day the universe gives me a chance to make a difference in my life; and as I see it, it’s one step at a time. When I have the option to choose, the polar opposite always presents itself in a way that makes risktaking difficult. When I think about risk, the question I ask myself daily is, “how do I want to make a difference in my life today, and how will this specific decision affect my tomorrow?” The biggest risk yet was deciding to quit full-time travel nursing, take on a per diem position where I only work 4 days a month as a registered nurse, and dedicate the remainder of my time to my acting career. Overall, the role of taking risk has put me one step closer to becoming a full-time actor and living a life of abundance! The results of my risk thus far has granted me a theatrical and commercial agent, 4 feature films on streaming networks, and awesome ongoing training in scene study, commercial and booking technique. I recognize my acting career will advance; this is a marathon, not a race. As I continue to explore my fears, I’ll always embrace its antidote which is courage, the tenacity to continue moving forward no matter the obstacles and risk I have to take.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been involved in the performing arts since the 1st grade; singing, writing songs and poetry, playing the keyboard and organ, and musical theater; all performed in my own unique way. The talent within me set me ablaze with enthusiasm for the arts. The most beautiful thing about art is that it’s what you as the artist perceives of it. No one has the right to define art as good or bad, it just is. Whomsoever resonates with my artistry, that’s who my target audience is. As I continued to grow as an artist, I took a strong liking to film and television. I’m most proud of my nich for physical comedy. The fact that I can easily manipulate my body in a humorous way or make funny faces willingly, it brings me so much joy; I feel free performing in this manner. If I can get even a little squeak out of an audience, I’m truly satisfied. With where I am today professionally, that came with a lot of failures, self-doubt, and even negative impacts role models. It was my boldness to not stay defeated that helped me become successful. Each step until now is a win for me, no matter how big or small. I hold true to the saying that you must first be grateful for a little before you can have alot. The risk I took to stop working fulltime as a nurse allowed me to hone in on my skillset. Initially, with the free time I had not working as a nurse I become stagnant. Eventually, I had to remind myself that it was a blessing to have such flexibility and that I needed to take full advantage of my time and use it wisely. I am now constantly self submitting myself for roles, I’m actively training, I’ve created my own sketch comedy content, and I’m seeking opportunities to connect with different artist to continue being inspired and motivated.
The world should know this: I want nothing more than to be a successful fulltime working actor while never forgetting to also live a full, enjoyable life which consists of quality time with my family and friends. I do not want to live my life in vain. I want to give something back to the world that will always be remembered, even if that’s a quick laugh or smile. My journey is still being processed and defined daily; I am constantly seeking for a good quality outcome.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not a Los Angeles native, but I take pride in my city! The moment my friends or family hit the city, the first stop is Runyon Canyon. This is the most peaceful and beautiful hike for me. I prefer the hardest trail known as the west trail or the “spine trail”. After hiking the toughest and steepest trail, you’ll build up an appetite. I usually like to go to the body energy club after and order the blueberry acai, it’s heavenly! It has almond milk, blueberry, banana, acai (of course), and delicious almond butter. Well, what a coincidence, the body energy club is right on the Hollywood walk of fame on hollywood blvd; this is a must while in Los Angeles. This is a great photo opportunity and the time to find all your favorite actors, singers, and musicians. Keep on walking down the Blvd because the next stop would be the $10 Hollywood Boutique store. Interesting enough, if you grab a hand basket in the store, everything in the store turns into $5 and you even get a free gift at the end of your purchase. The Ultimate Hollywood Tours is a great way to see most of the city, including celebrity homes, most of hollywood and beverly hills. Now depending on the time, breakfast is a must. We are eating at the Griddle Cafe because the pancakes are freaking humongous. I even got a spot for the vegans called Cafe Gratitude. Its amazing, the most unique thing about this place is when you you’re prompted to state what you’re most grateful for.
I’m a lover of a good early and late happy hour. My early happy hour choice would be Gracias Madre in West Hollywood. The Purista Margarita is a must. My late night happy hour choice would be 33 Taps, the food and drinks are reasonably priced and all of the staff there are so friendly.
Who would I be if I didn’t offer dinner. The 3 most recommended places would be Fixin’s Soul Kitchen (get the fried catfish or oxtails and peach cobbler for dessert), Warrior (these portions are huge, get the orange chicken and fried rice), and Katana LA (get everything haha). The names speak for themselves, it has great food and a good atmosphere.
Dessert could not be missed. We are going to Better Than Sex Dessert Restaurant. I’d recommend getting the trio option so you can try more than one cake!
If one would need some very chill vibes, Mama’s Shelter and Grandmaster Recorders are my two most favorite rooftops in L.A. However, if one wanted to drop it like it’s hot, we’d have to make our way to WeHo, most likely Trunks because the vibe there is good; Beyonce Renaissance album is typically played at midnight! Overall, its a wonderful place for bar hopping! On the calmer side of things, a walk at Echo Park, preferably riding on the lovely swan boats; it’s s a perfect end to any day.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my booking coach Amy Lyndon. She handpicks my study material based on who she knows I’ll be able to portray in Film and TV, even if I don’t see it for myself. She spots my weaknesses each class, and challenges all of my fears as an actor. I’d also like to give a shoutout to my theatrical agent Tabitha Kit. After 6 years of building my package, Tabitha was the first agent to believe in my success as an actor. Most importantly, I’d like to give a shoutout to my mother Tonga, my father Oscar, my sister Ebonie, my two bestfriends Justin and Jermaill, and my spouse Gustavo. They all have supported my dreams as an actor on a continuous basis and I strongly appreciate their love and encouragement.
