We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Tomack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Max, how do you think about risk?
As a songwriter, everything is a potential risk. Will people like it? Are people going to think it’s lame? It’s always a risk. The least risky thing I could do is to be myself in my writing. Staying true to yourself is the best way to feel comfortable in what you put into the world, and even then not everyone is going to be a fan. So just be you!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been playing music since I was 3 years old. Starting with a little drum set and working my way up to a Squier Stratocaster at 5 years old. Whenever I run into a picture of 5 year old Max, I always think to myself, “that kid has no clue what he’s getting himself into”. I’m almost 20 years into playing music, and I still learn something new everyday. Being in a band is no walk in the park, I think anyone in a band would tell you it’s lot more than just looking cool and writing tunes. Yes, it’s me and 3 of my best friends hanging out, jamming and dreaming of the future, but it’s also 4 guys putting their all into their passion, which can lead to a lot of different conversations and feelings on any given occasion. Nevertheless, it’s what makes Kiss the Scientist the way we are, and I’m beyond proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and what our future holds. From playing in front of 3 people at empty bars, to sold out shows at the infamous Whisky A Go-Go, it still feels like we’re just getting started.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As an LA native, I’m quite the home body. But if I had to take my friend around the greater area of Los Angeles, here’s what I’d do:
CONCERTS FOR SURE!! As a musician, how could you not love live music? Especially in LA, there’s shows every single night on every single corner! The Hollywood Palladium is my personal favorite venue to see any show, but even at your local bar or DIY venue, you never know if you’ll run into your new favorite artist.
I’m a big theme park guy, whether it’s Disneyland, Six Flags or Universal Studios, I’m always game for an afternoon at the theme park. Between rides, food, entertainment or even people watching there’s something for everyone!
Although I’m not the biggest water person, who doesn’t love some cornhole down at the beach?! An ice cold brewski in my left hand, and a cornhole beanbag in my right, and we’re having an excellent beach day!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends and family have supported me through every stage of my musical life. From cover bands, to high school bands, to random projects and of course my band Kiss the Scientist, I’ve been fortunate enough to have all the support I could ever ask for, and it’s only fair that I dedicate this shoutout to my awesome parents and brother, my amazing girlfriend Camille, and all of my best friends who’ve been here along the way.
