Meet Maya Peats | Founder/Designer of Degxnerate Youth

We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Peats and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maya, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance is something I’ve struggled with for a long time, both academically and artistically. I have a natural love for learning, and over time, I’ve discovered that I’m capable of quickly applying new knowledge to acquire skills. In high school, juggling advanced classes, dual enrollment, managing the fashion club, and playing sports taught me how to manage my time efficiently and stay disciplined in prioritizing my responsibilities.
Now in college, while managing life as a full-time student and running my brand, Degxnerate Youth, on my own, I’ve come to realize the importance of asking for help and prioritizing my basic needs before focusing on schoolwork and creative projects.
After a year of handling Degxnerate Youth by myself, I made the decision to bring in my older sister, Olivia Peats, to help manage the brand. As the art director, she oversees all marketing, photography, editing, and graphic design for the business. With her support, I’ve been able to bring more of my ideas to life without sacrificing my mental and physical well-being. Having a business partner has not only motivated me to seek out new opportunities for the growth of Degxnerate Youth but has also reinforced the importance of maintaining and prioritizing my own health as the foundation for success.

What should our readers know about your business?
With an ethos rooted in originality and nonconformity, Degxnerate Youth embodies these principles through unisex, avant-garde, and dystopian-inspired fashion created using upcycling and ethical production methods. As the founder and designer, I’ve been dedicated to honing my craft and establishing the brand as a unique voice in today’s fashion. While studying at Otis College of Art and Design, I often merge my personal style with institutional techniques to bring my visions to life.
Degxnerate Youth is set apart by our deep connection to the creative community. We draw inspiration from the experiences and skills of other artists working in photography, fine arts, graphic design, digital design, and textile science. Collaboration plays a central role in our process, as many of our models and collaborators are creatives themselves, contributing their unique perspectives to our campaigns.
Since the debut of our first collection, Decadence, for SS23, we have been focused on expanding the reach and message of the brand. Through participating in flea markets and pop-ups across the Los Angeles area, we’ve showcased the sustainable craftsmanship and innovative designs that define Degxnerate Youth. Our SS24 collection, Intemperance, was presented at the TENS Fashion Show, with select pieces making their way to NYFW 2024, where they were worn by various artists and creators.
Developing Degxnerate Youth has not been easy easy, but the challenges have taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and staying true to my vision. Degxnerate Youth is not just a fashion brand, it’s a statement about sustainability, individuality, and the power of the creative community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in LA are Cabrillo Beach and Aquarium, Baldwin Hills Overlook, Leimart Park, Roessler Point in Rancho Palos Verdes, and Venice Boardwalk. I am most inspired by nature as it is a refreshing break from the high demands of the fashion industry.
The Intemperance Editorial Photoshoot took place at Cabrillo Beach, where the rocky cliffs, sandy terrain, and frequent gusts of wind served as the perfect environment and world for our garments. The unique environment allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the raw beauty of this location. Through careful composition and creative direction, we were able to capture the bold, gritty, and timeless elements that define the collection.
Another place I enjoy is Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. Sitting at the view from the top is a grounding experience that I try to return to whenever I need to reset.
Leimert Park, exhibits a community that inspires me artistically and culturally.. As a biracial person (half Filipino and half St. Kittian) I feel deeply connected to the energy of this community. Wah Gwaan in Lemart Park, is my favorite Caribbean restaurant in LA and reminds me of my culture. Afterwards I like to walk around the strip and support the work of local artists.
Roessler Point in Rancho Palos Verdes has an incredible view of the South Bay. It is another place I attend when I need to reset, as it is beautiful during both the day and nighttime.
Lastly, I enjoy walking Venice Boardwalk, as I see small businesses and street vendors thriving, creatives showcasing their work, and performers expressing themselves in ways that are authentic. It’s a community filled with joy and individuality, which reminds me why I am an artist in the first place.
Each of these places inspire me in their own way, as they all remind me of the joy that comes from creativity, connection, and staying true to yourself.
