We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Rosalia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As an artist, its important to continually push yourself to explore new horizons and demonstrate personal growth. Taking risks and embracing the unknown is essential. When I first debuted as an artist at the tender age of 12, I created music that I believed to be trendy. Influential figures in the industry, who were more successful than I, often dictated my choices, and I felt compelled to heed their advice.

However, as I matured and gained a deeper understanding of both myself and my audience, I realized that I knew best what resonated with them and what type of music I excelled at creating. My sound is in a state of constant evolution; I refuse to confine myself to a single genre. I aspire to connect with my audience on a more profound level, delving into emotional depths while also crafting music that compels them to dance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a perfectionist and somewhat of a workaholic, deeply passionate about every aspect of my craft: writing, creating, producing songs, making music videos, and putting on performances. This has been my nature since I was eight years old. Even at such a young age, I was ambitious, forming a group with my friends, sending them songs to cover, booking gigs, and attempting to create an album. I may not have known exactly what I was doing or how I would achieve my goals, but my drive was resolute.

My relentless work ethic sets me apart, but so does my music. I strive to tell stories through my songs, matching them with visuals to create an entire universe. This approach is inspired by the artists I admire, like Madison Beer, whose concert I attended. She transformed her album into a magical, conceptual world, and that experience has stayed with me. It solidified my desire to encapsulate such a remarkable universe through my music.

To succeed in this career, you must be a tireless self-promoter with clear intentions. It is crucial to ensure that your motivations are genuine, maintain a balanced mindset, and surround yourself with supportive people who will uplift you, especially during challenging times.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In my free time, I find joy in visiting the beach. Malibu and the Santa Monica Pier are among my favorite spots, especially experiencing the unique energy of the beach at night. It’s a delightful experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Los Angeles.

I also adore the vibrant atmosphere of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It’s also a fantastic place for spotting famous filming locations. As a fan of the movie “Clueless”, this is an added bonus.

West Hollywood offers charming spots like Croft Alley and Melrose Place. In the summer, I suggest visiting a café such as Toast Bakery Café for a delightful experience. Lastly, for my fellow Italians, Il Pastaio in Beverly Hills serves some of the finest Italian cuisine, making it a must-visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to extend my appreciation to Colin, a remarkably talented composer with whom I have had the pleasure of collaborating on recent songs with. We first crossed paths at my music conservatory, and his exceptional talent immediately caught my attention. Colin’s dedication and skill are truly commendable.

Together, we have created a significant body of work, with a few more songs yet to be announced. The process of making music together has been immensely enjoyable, and I am grateful to count him not only as a professional partner but also as one of my dearest friends.
