We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayon Denton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was built from a deep desire to have certain freedoms for myself and my family. Freedoms that wouldn’t be possible, if I worked for someone else. I wanted to live my life on my own terms and build something that I was proud of.
So many people who came before me had to endure, had to fight, and had to struggle for many of the freedoms we have today. I wanted to honor all the amazing people who led and paved the way, so that I might follow my dreams. And doing so, in an attempt to live as free as possible, while helping as many people along the way, as many have helped me.
Also, I just simply love entrepreneurship. I love the process of starting companies from scratch, building teams within those companies, and powerfully executing a common idea and vision.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been in the entertainment industry since Graduating from UCLA. I have produced and directed Commercials, Music Videos, Feature Films, TV pilots, and Web series. I recently started my second production company in 2017, M.D. Productions LLC. We are based out of Los Angeles. I think what sets us apart is our fervent belief that anything is possible with the right team, the right mindset, and a clear vision.
I am most proud of the amazing creatives, filmmakers, and team members who I am fortunate to create beside. We are an extremely diverse group of people and because of that, humanity is at the forefront of our minds and efforts in all of our work. We have a very clear vision of what we stand for, and continue to strive deeper, as we grow in the craft of filmmaking in an effort to tell the most solid stories that we possibly can. I am most excited about the journey and what we will be able to accomplish in the next few years. Our growth over the last few years has been amazing.
M.D. Productions was able to evolve to where it is today, from a pure and natural process of stubbornness and discipline to stay the course. The most important factor in any of our company’s story of success is the simple but key fact, is that the team never got complacent and was always striving to be better, and to learn and find new ways to innovate.
In no way was it easy. And it still is not easy because everyday brings its own challenges. We approach things one step at a time and one day at a time. And yet, as long as we are moving forward and making progress each day, we know that we are consistently growing. We have overcome a lot of the challenges we faced, by finding new ways to innovate and always remembering to reinvest ourselves and our company. You must invest time, energy, and yes money in order to continue to be successful.
The one thing I would want the world to know about me and my company is that we do this each and every day, because we truly love it. We are passionate about filmmaking, but we are more passionate about the people we get to work with and the amazing stories we get to tell.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So growing up in LA is so much fun. This would be my week with a friend in LA.
Day 1. Once picking my friend up from the airport we would grab a quick bite to eat at the world famous In-N-Out lol. Depending on the day, we would travel to South LA to go watch some basketball at the Drew League and see some of the best basketball street ballers vs some NBA elites. We would finish that day off with Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles with the Obama special.
Day 2. Would be an introduction into the studio world. I would take my friend to see some of my friends that work at either Warner Bros., Paramount Studios, or Sony to see the different buildings and a glimpse into the world of film making. Once done we can grab some food, coffee and pastries at Porto’s Bakery.
Day 3: would be beach day, we would ride up the coast to Malibu and hit El Matador Beach till the afternoon. We would eat lunch at Nobu Malibu and then go on a hike at either Zuma Canyon, Tuna Canyon, or Escondido. We would finish the night at Dukes in Malibu for some Hawaiian Fusion Hula Pie .
Day 4: We would do a tourist day in LA, and hit Hollywood Blvd to see the Walk of fame, then hit Griffith Park, and lastly go to a LACMA exhibit. Since we are in LA, we would have to do Mexican food for dinner on this night at Guisados.
Day 5: Would be the last night and we would leave LA kinda and go to DISNEYLAND!!! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to God, and to my support system my family!!! My dad first for being the leader of our family, my mom for being the foundation, my sister for being the support, and Natalie for believing in me!!! And also, my two baby boys Noah and Tristin for keeping me focused.
