We had the good fortune of connecting with Mcklyn Valenciano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mcklyn, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I am a firm believer in putting people first. As a fashion photographer, I value people, the relationships of my clients, models, agencies and creative team. I always try and deliver my best work to those that step in front of my camera and those who hire me for their vision/branding. I believe in authenticity, loyalty and try to bring a warmth and passion to my work. I have been so fortunate to have been in this business for nearly 20 years in a very cutthroat and competitive field and I believe that stems from the relationships I have made and delivering work that I can stand by.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a fashion photographer with a love for light, people, fashion and travel. I always work to merge my passions in a gentle, disarming and timeless manner. I want the viewer to feel something, the model to express a mood, and the client to have their message delivered with ease. I started with an interest in the modeling and fashion industry. Having worked in front of the camera for a bit, I value direction, movement, expression and clean lines. I worked among some brilliant photographers and creatives in the industry and traveled the world to learn and shape my craft to make it my own signature style. I hope to continue to grow and expand in this industry and beyond for many years to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Having lived in Seattle for well over a decade, I’ve grown quite fond of this bustling city and what it has to offer. Yes, Pike Place and the Space Needle have its appeal, but I would love visitors to see some of the charming and eclectic neighborhoods like Ballard (where I live), Fremont, Capital Hill and Queen Anne. I love a good stroll or a bike ride. I also love a ferry ride to the Olympic Penninsula, Bainbridge Island or Whidbey Island. There are so many diverse terrains and sights in this region. I also love to show visitors my favorite places to eat. From Fuji Bakery to Bakery Nouveau, to Santo Coffee and Woodland Coffee, Piccolino, San Fermo, Katsuburger, and even my famous homemade breakfast burritos. You won’t go hungry if you come to visit me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give credit to my family, especially my parents for supporting me and encouraging me to pursue what I love to do, even if that meant moving from Kauai to a bigger city. I am grateful to my partner, Ryan Conover for helping to shape my creative eye and to push the boundaries of what is expected. I am thankful for Teresa Pollman at IMD for giving me my start in this industry. Kristy & Nicole and the team at SMG for also bringing me on board to run their New Faces division while also allowing me the freedom to pursue my own freelance ventures as a fashion photographer. My creative team: Anna Wong, Dana Guyton, Lauren Smith, Erika Vasquez, Kim Brooks, Elisabeth Prehn, Melissa Korn, Brian Dean, Andrew Burkhardt and so many more who are talented artists and have helped me to grow, expand my vision and who have inspired me throughout the years.
