Meet Meeka Robinson Davis | Second Generation Black Milliner, Designer, Entrepreneur, and Store Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meeka Robinson Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meeka, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My name is Meeka Robisnon Davis and I am the owner of One of a Kind Hats in Los Angeles, California. One of a Kind has designed for some of Hollywood’s finest, including the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Shailene Woodley, Angela Simmons, and more. I began this over thirty year journey at the age of 16 and learned the art of millinery design. One of A Kind Hats’ locations have included Crenshaw Blvd., the Fox Hills Mall and Windsor Hills.
For a milliner who is Black, a woman, and from Los Angeles, navigating the path of entrepreneurship in the fashion industry included many risks. In this, I learned that the positive change that the fashion industry needs is rooted in bold risks– promoting inclusivity and using creativity to make a positive impact on the industry and the community.
It’s important to note that everyone’s “hat” is unique, and the specific risks one chooses to take will depend on their own goals, values, and circumstances. Venturing into entrepreneurship as a Black woman often involves challenging stereotypes and defying society’s expectations of who you should and shouldn’t be. This requires taking the risk of stepping into unconventional roles and industries to pave the way for others.
Access to capital has also been a significant risk for Black entrepreneurs. Taking financial risks, seeking funding, and making strategic investments are critical for maintaining a business despite the disparities in financial opportunities.
The role of risk for a Black female hat maker is diverse. It involves challenging norms, advocating for equity, seeking financial opportunities, and innovating in a way that contributes to a more inclusive and diverse entrepreneurial world. It’s a journey that requires courage, strategic decision-making, and a commitment to breaking down barriers for future generations of Black women in business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art work is millinery and design, which is hat creation. I am the owner of One of a Kind Hats in Los Angeles, California. What sets me apart is that I have been able to create uniqueness for the last thirty five years. Time, environment, and culture are all influences when it comes to what I make. I’ve found that the beauty of people can be grounding, yet so powerful at the same time.
Being a designer and entrepreneur hasn’t always hasn’t been easy, but passion has always been at the forefront of what I’ve done. Therefore, it’s taken away the sting of challenges.
I’ve learned the value in staying focused, positive, relevant, and uniquely yourself. Our brand, One of a Kind Hats, aims to promote the celebration of an individual’s truest self– there’s power in authenticity. When we tap into who we truly are meant to be, it inspires others to be their best selves, too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a wonderful place to live and explore. It is surrounded by so much beauty and culture; I think I would have a hard time limiting it to just a few places. I would begin by taking my friend to the Getty Museum to see the artwork. The combination of art and scenic beauty makes the visit not just about the artworks but also about the overall experience.
It’s also a great place to experience the scenery of Los Angeles and indulge in great eats! The museum is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds, which I would see and if time permits, I would explore nearby attractions or enjoy a leisurely walk in a scenic park.
The next few days, I would visit the city’s natural landmarks– canyons, beaches, and valleys alike. Nature is exciting and still. It also serves as a source of inspiration for me through colors, textures, and patterns. I often draw inspiration from the natural world’s hues, subtle tones, and organic combinations, which I later incorporate into hat designs, prints, and accessories.
Our trip would conclude with a venture to the Fashion District Downtown, and we would immerse ourselves in the oasis of fashion and design. The Fashion District is not only a marketplace but also a source of education for those interested in fashion. Workshops, seminars, and events often take place, providing opportunities to learn about different aspects of the industry. As a creative, I like to constantly find ways to educate myself and grow as a brand. Being around others who have the creative gift inspires me to maintain a vibrant and eclectic fashion presence in the hat world.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to devote my shoutout to my mother, Sonja Robinson, for teaching me the world of business, craftsmanship, art and trade, and stick-toit-iveness.
Being a black woman in a male dominated industry, such as entrepreneurship, can be intimidating. I learned from an early age through her that I had to learn to be strong and endure.
A lot of the fears that women have about creating their own business can be instilled in them by men who are just intimidated by the greatness that lives inside of them. My mom has always been bold, she’s always been herself, and most importantly – never afraid to pursue her dreams because of somebody else’s insecurities or fears about their own selves.
Now having my own path and establish my own career and agency, I feel grateful to take this gift and share it with the next generation. My daughter, Christiana Davis, assists me daily in the business, and holds position in the business. Through her, I’ve found legacy, which is so inspiring to me. What once started with my mother was passed onto me, and now lives inside of both me and my daughter. I’ve also seen the way that the fashion industry has revolutionized itself, and how big dreams can become big realities through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and even YouTube.
I think that it is rare and special for our family to pave the way for future generations of women in the business world. Female entrepreneurs, through their innovation, leadership, and resilience, contribute to breaking gender barriers, inspiring others, and building a legacy of empowerment and equality in the entrepreneurial landscape. Our achievements have a ripple effect, fostering a more inclusive and diverse business environment for women to thrive. I attribute my success to strong women.
