We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, how do you think about risk?
I’m a true Aries, so I’ve always loved the adrenalin rush that comes with any form of risk. There’s nothing more exciting than the unknown brought on by change, coupled with the excitement from a good challenge. Those things that can bring great change in life are always associated with some form of risk and the greater the opportunity the more risk. For me, the choices I’ve made with my career have always come with a significant form of risk in regard to stability and security. For that reason, I always play the same scenario out in my head when presented with life-changing career moments. What would be worse, passing on the opportunity due to fear, or do I accept the challenge and go in full force with the attitude that I won’t fail – plan for success! The latter has generally worked well for me, so I’m a big fan of risk.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I recently took the aforementioned, life-changing career moment risk… I am roughly a month into both a new company and my first role as a Chief Marketing Officer. I couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity. Anyone that knows me, will tell you I am always looking for ways to improve life, how you look, how you feel… in fact my mother always jokes and calls me Dr. Brown. I’ve always sought out those things that can naturally make you better or allow you to function at peak performance. For this reason, joining Veyl Ventures was a no-brainer for me. We develop health and wellness brands that improve people’s lives – specifically the way they feel about themselves. It’s certainly rewarding to be surrounded by like-minded people that are passionate about creating wellness for everyone – regardless of your stage in life.

When asked what I’m most proud of in regard to my career, I would absolutely say the teams I’ve helped build. That’s always been the hardest thing to leave behind… the people. I learned early on that great leaders hire even greater people and you let them do what they’re good at. Always provide guidance, try your best to inspire, speak with intention and share a clear vision, but stay the hell away from micro-managing. Empowering team members cultivates a community of contributors, and from that community, micro-leaders will naturally form and help you reach your shared vision and with far less friction. That’s how you scale. This leadership style has served me well over the years.
Aside from my French Bulldog, Burt Reynolds, I don’t have kids. So I often develop teams with the same passion others put into creating a family. It’s always so rewarding for me to see past team members continuing to excel in their careers. It’s such an honor when I’m asked to serve as a reference.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Best friend? That would definitely be my sister, Robin. She regularly visits and I always have a full itinerary planned for our time together – even down to the outfits! Let me try to give it a go… let’s say she was arriving next Friday evening and staying through Monday morning. Here is where you’ll most likely find us:

FRIDAY
Dinner: Fia on Wilshire
Late Night Drinks: Calabra Rooftop at the Proper Hotel

SATURDAY
Breakfast: Espresso and pastries from Tartine followed by a morning hike at Griffith Park
Lunch: The Alcove Café on Hillcrest in Los Feliz
Quick Massage + Mani & Pedi: so many options on Montana Ave., but highly recommend Chris from The Massage Place and mani and pedis outside at Artistic Nails
Dinner: Blue Plate Oysterette
Desert: Sweet Lady Jane

SUNDAY
Breakfast: The Courtyard Kitchen on Montana Ave
Lunch + Drinks + LIVE Music: Rosenthal Winery
Dinner: Forma on Montana

MONDAY
Quick Breakfast before LAX: Breadblok on Montana Ave

This would all be followed by a very sad trip back from LAX only comforted by my ‘On Repeat’ Spotify playlist:)
Love you Robbie!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would certainly give credit to my dad. He was an invincible force that taught me to never back down even in those fearful moments where you’re unsure of the outcome. That man could do anything he put his head and heart into. He was really tough on my siblings and me, but looking back on it now, I am certain it was intentional. My sister and I often laugh as if it wasn’t for our father, there would’ve been many moments in our careers where we would have just settled for inequality – but that wasn’t about to happen. Thanks to our father we’ve always understood our value and we’ve never been afraid to stand up for ourselves, which has served us well.
