We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan and Danielle Symes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, Danielle, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
We are a family originally from the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. We moved here together in the early months of the year 2000 and have been lucky to be able to call Southern California our home ever since. In various ways, this has been one of the biggest impacts on who we are today. For one, being first generation immigrants has brought us a unique perspective to the world we live in because of the obstacles we watched our parents endure and the sacrifices we witnessed them make. Their risk taking attitudes and perseverance through daunting challenges have instilled in us an entrepreneurial mindset that pushes us to take leaps of faith and motivates to push through times of uncertainty. Additionally, I think because our parents were focused on just trying to make it in America, we may have had different pressures than that of some of our peers. We were not pressured to go down a specific path or to follow certain societal standards, but were supported to choose our own journeys and venture into anything we were passionate about – which helped us in taking the leap with Pauli & Sisters.
Pauli & Sisters was created with tribute to our grandfather in mind. A cosmetic chemist and brilliant mind who passed away at the young age of 49 years old and left an unfinished legacy in his formula, as well as a generation of grandchildren who went on to share his work with the world. And with that, Pauli & Sisters was born.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pauli & Sisters is a small business, family owned, one product (as of now) skincare company with a formula so special it has stood the test of time. Our product, “Repair Serum”, is a holistic hero oil with 11 active ingredients working to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars & uneven skin tone. We believe that you can heal your skin with the perfect balance of natural oils. Growing up, we suffered from every skin problem under the sun. Fluctuations from oil to dry, rosacea and rashes, acne that led to scarring, and growth spurts that led to severe stretch marks… After numerous trips to the dermatologist, a surplus of steroid creams, antibiotics, and trying every topical in the aisle, we knew enough was enough. We needed a natural approach to heal and repair our skin for the long term. So we set out to recreate our grandfather’s oil and share it with the rest of the world. What sets us apart is that we’re not necessarily beauty experts, but we’d like to consider ourself skincare enthusiasts. Enthusiasts in the sense that, we’ve experienced a lot with our skin and we simply couldn’t find a product out there that we needed. A lot of the time, skincare is clinical, expensive, and it targets only a certain community of people. At Pauli & Sisters, we believe that skincare should be natural, affordable, and most importantly fun- so we made sure those beliefs really shine through from packaging down to the product itself. $1 of every product sold goes to support Thorn. Thorn is dedicated to ending child sex trafficking and combat online child exploitation in the United States and overseas.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The most beautiful part of where we live, without a doubt, is the beach! Typically when friends come to visit, first stop would be to take them to Crystal Cove beach for a coffee and a long walk and stop by at Bear Flag Fish Company for a burrito or poke salad on the way home. If it’s a long summer day, we would ride bikes from Newport to Huntington Beach, rent a duffy for a couple of hours, or pack a picnic and set up for a sunset dinner at the beach.
In the evenings, I’d take my friends out for sundowners and appetizers in Laguna Beach at restaurants such as The Deck, The Cliffs, or Mozambique (one of our favorites). If our friends are keen on watching sports, you can’t go wrong with American Dream in Huntington Beach or Sandys Beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to dedicate our shoutout to two people: our father, Dominic Symes, and our grandfather, Paul Symes, whom we never had the opportunity of meeting due to his sudden passing when our father was just thirteen years old. Paul’s inspiring career is the basis for Pauli & Sisters and the reason we are so passionate about what we are doing. For us, Pauli & Sisters is not only special in that it is a labor of love, but because it resembles a person we look up to and a family legacy that we hold very close to our hearts. We hope that he is proud of what we are doing because we are proud of what he created.
