We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Nager and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My dad and grandpa are both serial entrepreneurs so seeing them run their own businesses made me want to start my own business from a young age. I’ve always been inherently entrepreneurial and am someone who’s very independent so it was something I knew I’d eventually want to do. After creating my own content for years and working at various production companies, I finally felt like I had accrued enough knowledge to embark on my own journey. The thing I love about owning my own business is that although there is a lot of risk, there’s also a lot of reward. It’s your vision, and there is no one to report to and I think that’s super powerful.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the CEO of a full scale digital marketing and production company, Wake & Make Media. Wake & Make started in the heart of Los Angeles when my then boyfriend, Corey, and I decided to produce our own series for Amazon. Corey is an amazing cinematographer and worked at WME and Endeavor Content for years – working with companies such as Miss Universe, PBR, Ciroc and more. I had worked mainly in front of the camera as an actress and comedian, as well as at large scale production companies. So, when we came together, our skills really complemented one another and it made sense to try to work together. It obviously went well because here we are today 6 years later running our company successfully.

That’s not to say there haven’t been significant challenges and a lot of learning along the way. Running your own business is HARD. Anything entrepreneurial is hard. It can be lonely at times and it feels like you’re navigating a path that no one has traveled before because it’s so specific to your business. It’s also been important for us to shift our game plan and strategy along the way as well to tailor to different industries and clients. Because we now do both digital marketing and production, our digital marketing has had a lot of adjustments along the way as we’ve learned that it’s important to niche down and target specific industries.

Our brand and company is unique in that we bring Hollywood-level filming and producing to small scale businesses and productions. Whereas most digital marketing companies will film simple content on their iphone or outsource their content, we do it all in house and with filmmakers who worked in Hollywood and who really understand the power of storytelling.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do in LA which is why I love it so much. I would definitely take them to Malibu and walk along the beach – it’s one of my favorite areas in LA. I also am obsessed with the restaurants Crossroads and Gracias Madre so we’d have to stop there as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank my dad for always believing in me and giving me the courage to embark on my own business venture. Growing up, he always made me feel like it was possible to do whatever I set my mind on and he very much encouraged a non-traditional job path. My husband and business partner, Corey, has also been quintessential in my success and ability to run my own company. We make a great team and what I’m unable to do, he does and vice versa.
