Meet Megan Parker | American Traditional Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind the success of my brand would be the hours I was willing to put into my apprenticeship. I worked eight hours a day, six days a week for the two years I apprenticed. It’s also important to note the importance of apprenticing under someone at a shop. There are so many important lessons to be learned at a shop with guidance that you simply cannot teach yourself when you’re not learning to tattoo the correct way. You need those building blocks and fundamentals to make any real progress, not to mention health safety.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sometimes as a female artist clients assume I want to do “feminine tattoos.” I do NOT want to do those. I love the masculinity of American traditional. I love the bold outlines, heavy black shading, and bold colors. Tough guy tattoos are my favorite, skulls, weapons, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s so hard to chose just a few cool things to do in the valley, or Los Angeles in general. I tell everyone to eat at El Cocinero in Van Nuys, that’s a must. Vegans and non-vegans alike love that spot. There’s tons of cool and interesting architectural buildings or neon lights to see. Circus liquor is probably my favorite, and luckily I get to see him everyday. Drag shows at the Idle Hour in North Hollywood are a great time too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shout out is dedicated to my two mentors Manny Daggers and Derek Sayeg.
