We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Roy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The most important decision I made that contributed to my success was saying “yes” to every single opportunity I was given. When I started my business, I had an idea of what I liked and where I wanted to go, but no real experience. The only way to get that experience was by actively seeking out opportunities and making myself available for them when they arose. I think it’s really important to try a lot of things. Not only does it give you experience and credibility when you apply for future projects, it gives you more confidence in your own abilities because you’ve tackled so many things you didn’t think you’d be able to. There’s obviously a line somewhere, and everyone’s will be in a different place, you can’t literally say yes to everything all the time – but really making an effort to do as much as possible is what helped grow my business in it’s early days and gave me the personal boost I needed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My illustration style is playful and full of color! I like to describe it as feminine leaning, but not overly girly. I do a lot of work related to animal rescue, dogs in particular, and have started a second sub-business called Good Dog Dicitonary (@gooddogdictionary) that focuses on the things that make every dog special and worth loving. I got to where I am today by following my instincts and taking every job that I could get. It’s really as simple as that. Sometimes a project leads nowhere, but other times it goes viral and your social media account triples in size. You just never know! But you won’t find out unless you follow it through to the end. My story is a classic example of preparation meets luck: I try hard, I’m always looking for opportunities, and occasionally I find something that really resonates with a lot of people in a way that I didn’t expect.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The last time my best friend visited we tried to get our aura’s read at the Westfield Topanga Village, but the “aura machine” was broken, so I’d probably take her to try that again. We’d definitely also make sure to grab tacos from Tacos Reyes, do an escape room at Quest Room, and probably have an outdoor movie night with s’mores in my backyard. I’m more of a homebody, I like getting cozy in my own space!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My fiance is my biggest supporter and I firmly believe that I wouldn’t be here without him! He’s always encouraged me to pursue whatever will make me happiest.
