Meet Meghan Chou | Production Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meghan Chou and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meghan, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a kid, my imagination used to get me in trouble. No matter what class, I couldn’t pay attention and always got caught daydreaming. I wanted to write, make films, tell stories. That need to create bled into all aspects of my life. I entered college knowing that I wanted to study the arts. After graduating with degrees in Film and Creative Writing, I decided to pursue a career in Production Design. I feel very fortunate to have worked on incredible projects. Nowadays, my imagination is my greatest asset and I think my younger self would be amazed at the career I get to lead.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work in many different sectors of entertainment, from TV and film to commercials and experiential events. Recently, I designed a pop-up for Nike Jordan at NYFW, which was an incredibly exciting opportunity. We partnered with Spike Lee’s 40 Acres to create an immersive experience, celebrating a new sneaker collaboration with Who Decides War. Production design allows me to meet so many talented creatives. The adrenaline of being on set and collaborating in real time drives my passion for this work. Whether on a DIY indie film or a non-profit PSA, the power of teamwork gives the project even more meaning.
I studied Film and Creative Writing in college. While in school, I found a group of friends who loved filmmaking too and we made a series of short films and music videos together. On those intimate sets, I ended up covering multiple roles. I quickly realized Production Design excited me the most and I pursued it after graduating. I started my design career in television on shows like “The 1619 Project” before pivoting to commercials. Now, I find myself returning to my roots in indie filmmaking and plan to make my directorial debut with an original dance film called “Technicolor Yawn”. We will begin fundraising and pre-production in the new year.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am big into food. A few of my favorite spots in LA are pp. pop, Leo’s Tacos Truck, and The Prince. There are so many great movie theaters with special programming too: TCL, Vista, and Brain Dead Studios. Plus thrifting like the Melrose Trading Post where you can find so many great steals and unique pieces.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom and brothers!
