Meet Melanie Doshi | Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Doshi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
Grow Kid Grow Children’s Resale Shop is a wonderful way for parents to recycle their children’s clothing. I was a customer here for many years before becoming an owner. Trading as well as shopping preloved with my daughters at a very young age taught them the importance of sustainability. They also see me working hard to spread the word that Grow Kid Grow wants to support and give back to our local community by providing our sustainable mission. Our goal is to help the environment by reusing and recycling practically perfect Children’s clothing, shoes, toys and books and baby essentials keeping them out of landfills and giving them a second or third life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
From a very early age, I was drawn to recycled clothing. Going to school in New York City and being surrounded by fashion and thrift stores it became very clear to me that thrifting was my happy place. You could almost always find me at some of the most amazing Vintage shops on the lower east side of Manhattan almost every chance I got.
Fast forward after college and my love for vintage and fashion led me to work for a famous New York fashion designer that would mix and match vintage inspired pieces. with timeless contemporary fashion.
I sold her collections to major department stores for over 14 years which moved me to LA to manage the corporate showroom. The recession hit and the fashion industry was collapsing so I decided to meld my passion and experience and take over a high end women’s Consignment Shop in Montrose but that’s another story.
Fast forward a few years and 2 kids later when I got wind that there was an opportunity to purchase Grow Kid Grow. This lovely resale boutique which I quite frequently shopped, traded and consigned my daughters clothing would be closing in a few months if they couldn’t find a buyer! I couldn’t just let this magical shop, a staple of our community close its doors!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well being that I’m a mom, and all my friends are also moms I would start by suggesting the Broad, Griffith Park, Grand Park, LACMA, and of course taking a short drive to the Last Bookstore DT. I also love strolling around Descanco gardens in Montrose and taking in the beauty. Spending time at the Silverlake Farmers Market and eating at Pine and Crane is also a family fav of ours.
We live in Echo Park so thrifting at Sundays Best, then grabbing some tacos at Guisados, and checking out the cool clothing at Nooworks is also fun. Then there’s Salazar for eats and drinks and walking the LA river as an afternoon activity. Sometimes we just like to grab a vegan pizza from Hot Tounge and just chill at Echo Park lake and watch the tourists ride the sawn peddle boats.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Nikita Patel my silent partner has always been an intricate part of this journey from when we purchased the business in July 2019 to current. We wouldn’t be where we are today without her help.
