We had the good fortune of connecting with melanie ornelas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi melanie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk has played a major role in my career. I graduated college with my degree in public relations and upon graduating, I decided to change my career path and go back to school for interior design. I took a risk in changing my life direction and began reaching out to designer. I was hired by a celebrity designer with no previous design experience. I worked for that company almost a year when I decided to to take the knowledge I had from public relations and the experience I gained in design to launch my own event design company in July 2020. For the first time I was confident in my career path and was not going to let the pandemic stop me from starting my business, even though all events and social gatherings were being cancelled. I found my niche by doing small luxury picnics when there was nothing else you could do and since then it have seen a constant growth in myself and my company. Taking risks is what got me to where I am along with having the mindset that nothing could get in my way.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are a boutique event design company located in Santa Clarita, Ca. What I am most proud of is how far we’ve come in such short period of time. When I launched Emerald & May we were promoted our luxury picnic services, 10 months later we have designed, planned, and coordinated: elopements, weddings, baby showers, birthdays, graduation ceremonies and many more. I think the reason we got to where we are in a short period of time was because our strong branding and our design identity. The clients we attract book us because they love our style and give us full creative control when designing their events which is something that I am extremely grateful for. I wouldn’t say our journey here was hard but it was because we were fully prepared. I received my bachelor’s degree in public relations so I have knowledge and experience on how to build a successful and strong brand identity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Santa Clarita for the weekend I would take her to Grit and Gratitude for a killer Pilates class in the cutest studio, we would have lunch at either Draconum in their beer garden or grab cocktails at The Junction. We would take a stroll through Bridgeport lake and enjoy the views. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, boyfriend, and friends have been a constant support. My dad is a business owner and has always encouraged me to start my own business, if it weren’t for my family, friends, and boyfriend always pushing me and believing in me through all my career path changes I wouldn’t be where I am today.
