We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Dumaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew at a very young age that I didn’t want to live a life of being micromanaged by an employer. I knew I wanted autonomy over my time, my schedule, and my earning potential. Having my own Private Practice gives me that and it aligns with my passion with of helping others. I help busy people heal from their own traumas, have happy and satisfying relationships, and life a life that shows them how to stop neglecting themselves by taking care of their mind, body, and spirit.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created U Help You with a vision for others to see that asking for help is a strength. I want others to be encouraged to know that they are the expert of their lives, and that they possess what it takes to be and do all that they want; sometimes we just need a little help in getting there.

What sets me apart is this healing & growing journey is a collaboration. I bring the expertise as a Psychotherapist focused on trauma, relationships, and self-care, but my clients bring their expertise on who they are and what they’ve been through. We work together to get them where they want to go!

I’m where I am today by faith and works. I pray. I wait. Then I move. Once I set my mind to a goal, I go after it and make it happen! I ask questions, I remain open to learn and grow, and I invest in me and my business. I’ve learned from my mistakes, the mistakes of others, and I’m not afraid to take risks. I’m of the mindset that we either win or we learn, but either way we win. I have no regrets; only lessons learned.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in the city are the beach, restaurants with delicious plant-based food and/or seafood, and anywhere with good music and positive vibes and energy.

If I had a friend in town we’d begin at the beach for a bike ride along the strand, then we’d stop for brunch, mimosas included. And we’d end the night with dinner at Nobu or Mastro’s Ocean Club overlooking the ocean. Then wake up the next day and head to Real Food Daily for a delicious plant-based lunch before we dance off to an outdoor reggae festival filled with love and sunshine.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I didn’t get here by myself. It has truly been the grace of God on my life, the love & support of my husband, my family, friends, mentors, and my upbringing. Each experience, interaction, and moment with my support system has led me to these moments. I am grateful.
