We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Goodman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being a Boudoir Photographer is more than just taking “pretty portraits” of women. We offer an experience that is unique to each client, depending on their particular story and what they are looking for. I have the honor of working with folx who are healing from past traumas, making the decision to embrace scars, start or continue on the path of self acceptance after having kids and so much more. It’s also just as important, if doing a boudoir shoot is about being pampered for the day with professional makeup and hair and doing something fun for yourself. Plus, who doesn’t want to look back and have memories of how amazing they look! I strive to build a brand that is inclusive of all women and have our time working together be a safe space where they feel valued. The most important factors behind the success of making that happen are making sure that I lead with empathy, Integrity and staying authentic to who I am. My clients know that they can trust me with confidentiality and they will never feel pressured to have their images displayed or posted without consent.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A lot of women feel like they have to know how to model and look “sexy” to book a boudoir shoot. It’s actually the opposite! I am guiding them along and showing them exactly what to do the entire time. I love when they get a peek at the back of my camera and say “I can’t believe that’s me!” or “Wow, I can’t believe that’s my ass”! (can I say ass?) They get to see themselves through my eyes and it feels so good to start to see their confidence come out. They leave their shoot knowing how beautiful they are and proud of themselves for doing something that pushed them out of their comfort zone. It’s not easy to be a Mom in a suburban town and follow through with a career as a boudoir photographer. I’ve worked hard to get to the place that I am finally at today professionally and personally. I am proud of the art that I create for my clients to cherish forever.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m a huge believer that you can never stop learning and growing. I have taken classes, workshops, hired an amazing photographer as a business coach, and most recently started taking an online course called “The Boudoir University. The 7 Pillar Program: The Course For Photographers Who Give A Damn.” The Boudoir University is a collective of photographers & educators who are striving to create change within the photography industry. In an effort to ensure the safety and care of our clients, it is important to learn all of the ways which we may be unintentionally excluding people or causing harm. We are in a time of so much change in the world around us and while it’s exciting to see more and more acceptance, it’s important that as a photographer, my clients to be seen and heard.
