We had the good fortune of connecting with Memory Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Memory, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I obsess over quotes and affirmations but here is the one that sits in front of me every day, literally because it is tatted on my collar bones lol :

“Know Thyself”

I love literature and I find philosophy very intriguing, which is how I came to learn this quote when I was like 18. This quote dates back to Greek inscriptions. It means so much to me because it is so simple yet carries so much depth. I’m big on investing time in myself, getting comfortable with one’s solitude, and practicing mental healing. When one truly knows thyself they know their character and limitations, by knowing our deep-seated feelings, desires, beliefs, and intentions, we can actually improve our lives and trust ourselves to make the right decisions both consciously and unconsciously. When you know yourself, no one can try to tell you or convince you of who you are! It makes you independent in the opinion of others and you always confidently show up as YOURSELF, unapologetically.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If there are two things I am passionate about, it’s art and having my own! I started a freelance visual art and graphic design business called: WOMANTHOUART. I work out of my one-bedroom apartment overlooking downtown La where I provide freelance graphic design services for hustlers, and small businesses. This includes, but is not limited to logo design and brand styling. I also create and sell visual works of art and host intimate paint and sips for occasions.

My visual works of art are a reflection of myself. A black woman and empath, navigating through life in LA. My art shows how I feel, which may be revengeful, heart-less, confused, grateful, or powerful. Whichever my mood is, that’s the mood I try to evoke from whoever sees the art. I make art that’s gonna make you feel something.
I create digital works of art in sketchbook and AI. I use bright colors and big intense eyes full of emotion. A black woman is always the main character in my work. She has seen a lot, she feels too much and she’s always on a mission to remind herself that the trials and triumphs in life are what make her beautiful.

It’s been 4 years since I started my professional art journey and only 6 months since I started WOMANTHOUART to provide multiple art services. I do keep a main job where I work in branding, so financially I can be secure. But, my art journey isn’t the easiest because I am self-taught so I’ve had to learn every little thing from scratch and at times I can be a really hard critic on myself because I’m a perfectionist and I want to be one of the best! I’ve been told a bunch of times my art could never hang on walls so I didn’t feel good enough to be an artist. There is still so much to earn and organize as I tap into all of my creative abilities and sometimes I feel lost. At moments like this, I humble myself and look back at where I started and WHY I started. My why is the most important part and what keeps me going. I never did this for money and popularity but because I believe in God and I know deep within this is my divine purpose and nature’s therapy for my soul. I know as long as I keep going, everything will come together.

I am a middle child of 6 sisters and no brothers and I created WOMANTHOUART with the intent to inspire women, and break generational curses for myself and show my family it’s possible to have your own. I always say I did not choose art, art chose me!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Omg! this question gave me chills because I love going on adventures throughout LA. Everything has been closed due to Covid-19 so we will just imagine it’s a beautiful week in the Summer and everything is open lol. .

Sunday -We’d definitely start with brunch at,
Met Her at a Bar, from there we’d go shopping on FairFax. maybe even go walk on the Hollywood Walk of Fame or show my guest where they film the show; The Office. We’d end the night with some Benihibachi.

Monday-The next day we’d hop on scooters and head to Grand Central Market where we’d stand in that long but worth it line to Egg Slut. Then we’d go have a photoshoot in the USC rose garden. We’d end the night with Karaoke Night at Station 1640.

Tuesday-We’d go hiking at Runyon Canyon and then go have lunch at rooftop on Wilshire.

Wednesday- We’d have a museum day where we’d start at The Broad and then End up at LACMA and head to the bar right outside when we are done viewing art.

Thursday- We’d go to the movies at the grove, ride the train that shows you around the grove, and eat at the farmers market right there.

Friday- Beach Day! We vibing out at Venice. We will eat and drink at Cabo Wabo Cantina then hop on bikes and ride to Santa Monica where we’d enjoy some time in the sand and water with friends and family.

Saturday- Rest all day and then head to the strip club and turn up lol

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have no one specifically but I’d like to thank my family, my friends, and my co-workers who see and hear most of the dramatics I go through being an artreprenuer. They are there to listen to my frustration and cheer me on and hype me up when need be. There are days I feel like I am not worthy and I do something simple and they make me feel like I’m Picasso lol They have seen me come thus far and they truly believe in my gift so it is important I do not let them down! Love is the greatest inspiration and the people I love fuel me to keep going every day, whether they know it or not.
