We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Matteo Rossi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, how do you think about risk?
Calculated risks need to be taken in every aspect of life, but especially for those in the entertainment business. It takes a lot of sacrificing and planning, but if it is your passion, you know these things need to be done for the sake of enjoying what you do and climbing up in your career. I was fortunate enough to know what I wanted to do for a long time and I started out at 19 and thankfully, 14 years later, am still doing it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I was in High School, I began creative writing a lot more consistently and it wasn’t until I was at San Diego State in my second year that I told myself, why not put one of my stories into a film? I was able to build a small team and do a short film and after that, I was hooked. I loved the collaborative team process and after graduating I knew I wanted to continue and build up from there. Of course it’s not easy; you unfortunately encounter a lot of people who are all talk and no delivery, but thankfully if you build up a great team around you, these things turn a lot more positive. I always told myself no matter what I’m not giving up even during the hard times. It’s all about balance too; you want to stay busy and work on your craft somehow. I like to write a lot and always thinking about new stories. The last few feature films I’ve done I’m the most proud of including my feature film Chase and Shadows (which will release shortly) and also The Handler which is still in post. They are all character driven action crime thriller type films, which I love to write and direct.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I assume we are talking about post COVID where everything is open right? 🙂 In that case, the beach is a must of course, I’d probably take them to Malibu which is one of my favorites and there is some awesome hiking around there too with some beautiful views. I’d take them to the Getty as well which I love and I’d take them to a few awesome Italian restaurants that are all across the town from Pasadena to downtown LA. There are a few more hike trails around LA that I love too in griffith park and hopefully during the time there would be a film festival or screening we could go to as well. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All of those who believed in me when I was struggling and starting out at first and stayed by me to know I was never going to quit and saw the potential in me as well. The team that I still work with today; you know who you are, both behind and in front of the camera.
