We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Uhlenkott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Idaho but grew up in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles, California. I was an artistic child and very interested in the history of art. My creativity is still heavily influenced by historic styles and design from around the world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Though I am a graphic designer, my focus lately has been designing wallpaper and fabric at Spoonflower.com. I worked for many years as a graphic designer for the City of Los Angeles and now, as a retiree, my work is mostly for fun. I spend my days happily creating, often making sales at my Spoonflower shop. Since I work for myself, I have no boss and no supervision. My work is all pleasure!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My partner and I are lucky to live in Echo Park, near downtown Los Angeles. We are surrounded by wonderful culture, activities and restaurants. Really great restaurants! But our favorite place to entertain guests is our own home tiki lounge filled with vintage Hawaiiana, collectibles, nautical antiques, etc. It is a very popular spot for friends.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out to all the unnamed artists and designers throughout history who have shaped the decorative arts.
